Strange temperature guage problem

I'm now paying for saying my car hadn't given a day's trouble in 12 months :mad:

The temperature guage is being weird. Sometimes it goes up as high as it can go, if i then restart the engine it falls to where it should be (90ish degrees). Tonight it didn't move off the bottom.

When it is reading high the light doesn't come on though.

Any ideas what this could be?

I got the exhaust welded for a tenner and it passed the MOT today by the way

Yes, dying sender unit or perhaps a broken wire that is intermittantly shorting on a grounded bit of metal.

small possibility the welder knackered the sender up? Assuming it was the manifold being welded of course.

no, it started doing it on the way to sort the mot and it was the centre box.

i'll have a look tonight snow and light permitting
