I am having a problem with Vista Ultimate 64bit. If I owpen a windows explorer window the processor usage for that process is 50 - 65%, it I minimise it the useage goes back to 0%, click on it's icon on the task bar to maximise it and the processor useage jumps up to 50-65% every time. Any ideas what could be causing it?

I am 99.9% sure there is no virus or spyware on the system
I have turned the indexing service off

Still the same. AAAArrrrrgggghhhhh :(

Maybe the processor is being used to open the program. Just a suggestion...

erm, if it is in the task bar then it is already open, plus it is a constant 50 - 65% CPU usage when maximised, but thanks for the sarcasm all the same ;)

Are you seriously worried that your processor is being used to open and run a program?

65% of a core2duo at 3.2ghz to run a windows explorer session? Not worried, more interested and wondering if this is the cause of my Shadowrun lock-ups.

anyhow, there is something wrong, and someone on here might know why, stick around you might find out too :)

Do you have Aero enabled? If so, try it with Vista basic theme to see if its a GPU /driver issue.

That is purely a guess, but it may give you somewhere to start.

good call, no difference unfortunately :(

Seems something odd is going on or it could be background services. I have an [email protected] under Vista64 and with a ton of windows open and explorer, the processor idles around 15%.

Check your services Here

thanks for the link, I have turned loads of stuff off, but it hasn't solved it, but I have noticed that:

a) if I open an explorer window with the windows key and e I get the problem
b) if I click on the links in the start menu to open one i.e. documents, pictures or music it is fine
