Yet another 'my car is doing something it probably shouldn't' thread by me.

Well this time it's a strange noise that sounds like a wheel bearing on the way out. I was told it was a wheel bearing, but i'm not so sure.

It appears as a 'w' (lower case) sound, i.e. 'w w w w w w w' etc. and increases in frequency with the car's speed, about 4 or 5 times a second at ~40mph. At certain speeds it is inaudible - below 25mph and anything much above 40mph. It doesn't matter what gear the car is in either, it does it at the same speed regardless of whether it's in 3rd, 4th or 5th etc.

The thing that leads me to believe that it's not a wheel bearing is that it goes when the clutch is depressed. I initially thought it would be the clutch release bearing, but from what I've read, it doesn't quite fit the description of said knackered bearing symptoms.

It began about 8 months ago, and the car drove/still drives fine.

Any ideas as to what it may be?

After a bit of reading up, it sounds like it is likely transmission related - the output shaft bearing or whatever it is. Can anyone confirm?

Sounds expensive to me...

could be a thrust bearing, if it makes a differance when the clutch is engaged or not, but then it shouldnt be change so much when driving.

if it where a wheelbearing i would have thought the wheel would have dropepd after 8 months. i changed one that was whining for about a month, the bearing disintergrated by hand witht the bearing pullers. Centre didnt mind.

I had exactly the same symptoms, except there was also a noticeable vibration through the pedals with the sound which would get worse at high speed. It was 1 of the driveshafts, had it replaced by a garage for £230 and it's smooth as silk now.

Get it checked!

Is it more a woo woo woo sound or a high pitched whine?

It's a constant 'woo woo woo woo' etc, increases with road speed, is the same at any given speed in any gear, and as said goes when the clutch is depressed/in neutral.

As I said above, it's less noticable at certain speeds than others.

Cheers for the comments guys!

the input shaft bearing would vary with engine revs

by your description of the sound and the fact if varies with road speed, i think its a wheel bearing
