Strange Windows Search Indexer problem

Hey all.

I'm currently having a problem with some laptops that I'm imaging for the staff where I work. We created a machine from scratch with XP SP3, Office 2k7 etc, and then created an image from that.

Now when we boot the machines we've imaged and log in as administrator, we get a "Windows Search Indexer has stopped working and was closed". My first thought was to go into Control Panel > Indexing Options > Advanced > Rebuild, but this option is greyed out. "Restore defaults" is available to click and after clicking it gives me a message to say the settings will be restored to default, the index will be deleted and rebuilt upon reboot. Yet when I reboot I get the same error as before, and the rebuild option is still greyed out.

I've tried seemingly all combinations of disabling the service and trying to be able to click rebuilt but the option is forever greyed out and the error message pops up nearly every minute.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thanks in advance.

you need the service running..

start, run
services.msc

find Indexing, set it to automatic and start it

As soon as I set it running I get the error message and then the service stops.

Edit: Scratch that, the service keeps running even after the error, but I still can't choose rebuild even after a "Reset Defaults" and a restart.
