Strange XP login error

Hi all

Have a weird problem that has been going on for quite some time now with my work laptop. We are set up on a domain and use the traditional XP login screen to login to said domain. The problem I have is that, if I type ANYTHING other than the correct password followed by enter, the laptop reboots. Recently work introduced a warning screen that pops up before the login screen and sometimes I forget it is there and start typing my password. Nothing appears on screen as expected and when I realise my error I click OK to the message and the login screen appears. However I do not get more that 5 seconds of typing before the laptop reboots.

This became even more frustrating when today, after logging in correctly, I got the domain message that my password was due to expire in 14 days and would I like to change it. If I click NO the laptop appears to carry on processing the login but then reboots about 10 seconds later. If I click YES, the change password box appears and accepts characters but it is like there is an invisible countdown as the laptop then reboots after about 5-10 seconds.

It definitely seems to be a problem only on my laptop as I can log onto colleagues' laptops and make login errors without it rebooting. I am posting here mainly because the IT department have said they want me to courier my laptop to them and it would be gone for a minimum of a week. Their record with laptops from our office is not good and generally something is always cocked up.

Would really appreciate some feedback on this one.

TIA

Theres not an audit policy in there and for some reason its crashing on audit fail? They might have the log file configured to be a certain size and a failed audit might cause it to go over that size, i.e the audit fails and i.e the PC reboots as they have configured it too?

My guess anyway.

Or you might have a virus, tried safe mode?

Thanks for the replies guys. IT didn't seem to know what the problem was so that was what was making me think it wasn't something they have done as the problem does not replicate on any of my colleagues' laptops. I will try the safe mode and run a scan later too.

Thanks again and any other suggestions would be gratefully received.
