I'd try and isolate the issue to the network, or the set itself .... can you plug a USB pen drive with some 4K content directly into the TV and see how that plays?

Can you stream 1080P to this new set OK?

I dont have a usb pen drive big enough.
and yes 1080p and 3d movies are fine.

cheers for the reply

Is it having to transcode the 4k content?

My plex server cant transcode 4K fast enough to play to the TV. (Old i5 2500K)

Not trying to be silly here, i have no idea, i just installed the plex server and did not alter any plex settings.

How do i find that out ?

haveing the server transcode the 4ks does that mean the tv does not , and if i find the setting to allow the tv to do it wil the tv cope ?

cheers for the reply

It's most likely that Plex is trying to transcode the 4K content. I don't know where the setting is off the top of my head but you basically need to set it to stream the content direct.

Will have a look from home, but if you go to the webpage of the server, into settings, there should then be a server settings box, and a streaming tab.

That is from memory so might have changed

I imagine the plex client app on the TV has a bitrate limit so it can't direct play from the server because it's 4K.

So your server CPU might be struggling with the transcoding.

just a wee update.

I still cannot for the life of me get the web os 3 plex app to stream 4k content on my tv.

but using the web os3 pic/video app and browsing to the plex server then playing the film it all works ? lol, i have no idea why.

would a anazon fire tv player be a better option ? does anyone use one of these to play 4k content from a server ?. i woudl get one to test but i woudl nto want to waste my money. so if anyone has any ideas woudl be great.

i have dug intot he dlna setting and tried various settings,

mine was initialy set to false for both direct play and direct stream ? is that the ideal setting or do both of them need to be put to true ?

thanks for the advice

What is the server showing

The above shows a Direct Play steam to my Samsung TV (running Plex app), what does yours show?

Thanks

now when i am streaming via the video/pic app on web os 3 it connects to the plex media server and plays just fine. as soon as i try and use the inbuilt plex app no way will it play stable just judders and stutters. so im thinking it cannot be the plex server rather than the plex web os ap ? is there anyone with alg tv with web os 3 ?

cheers

Does Plex Media Player have support for 4K?

Yes! Plex Media Player automatically detects the resolution of your screen and draws the interface accordingly. The app also supports playback of 4K video files using the H.264 (AVC) codec in most containers, so long as your computer is powerful enough to decode it.
Sounds like your pentium isnt powerful enough to decode 4k, so set plex to direct mode.

From plex
If your server isn't powerful enough for how you use it, you will notice playback issues such as stuttering, buffering, or sometimes even an inability to play at all. If this happens, it usually means the CPU can't keep up with the number of users or the amount of transcoding or both. So, you might consider upgrading your hardware. It may also mean that your hardware is fine but your network is too slow.

I don't think the current Plex app on Web OS 3 can do 4k direct play, which is what you need really.

Have you tried X-Play instead? It's on the LG app store so may be worth trying!

I am personally awaiting delivery of an Nvidia Shield TV as well, which should do 4k Direct Play via Plex.

Yes

or a NVidia shield for slightly more money.

Your server looks absolutely fine and you have a hard wired connection so Plex is still struggling with transcoding (unlikely I think, but with big enough files more than possible) or the TV app is just poor (and that would not surprise me one bit).

Also you are using plex and it just loves to transcode and its client can be a bit flakey on some devices.

Try Kodi.

I do actually still have plex and use it for TV but all my high end stuff Blu Rays and 4k I use Kodi.
