a question for the cine gurus here.

i have a htpc+nas for my film collection,

my cousin abroad asked if i am able to stream the films to him via my htpc.

the htpc is running a intel atom ion with boxee

is this possible and will there be lag and quality problems ?

im completely clueless on how to do this

As well as being illegal, it's completely impractical and VERY dependant on your internet connection (upload rate), connections between you and his country and then his internet connection.

It's not about your latency, it's how much data your internet connection can shift to your cousin.

Streaming movies would be beyond the limits of your internet connection I assume.

ok i see its to do with my upload speed.

i guess thats gonna be pointless. i think 1.3mbps is not going to cut it for streaming hd content

Most definitely not. If you look at the bit rates of the movies on your NAS, you'll realise that there's a deficit between its bit rate and your upload speed.

1.3Mb upload = 162 KB/s max throughput, you'll average less than that of course, probably around 120KB/s.

Compare that to the bit rate of 8.5GB 1080p videos which is 8-10Mb/s and 4.5GB 720p videos which is 5-6Mb/s for just the video.

Add 1.5Mb/s for the audio.

Even SD content would be too much.

For SD content, you're looking at around 1Mb-1.5Mb for video and 150Kb/s for audio.
