stretching to be flexible

Iv always had stiff arms and legs for as long as i can remember, iv never ever ever been able to touch my feet, i seem to be getting a bit stiffer now, my exercise routine is a bit none existant, i just have a bit here and there.
Basically im starting to play football a bit more concistently now, probably be every week for a team, and my stiff muscles hold me back a lot, im going to start doing a bit of freestyle in my freetime too, but i really need to loosen my muscles off for this, any advice in best ways to do this, i dont want to be as flexible as a gymnast, just a lot more ermm.. versatile?
