Stripped screw / screwdriver tip removal

Sorry for the late reply, I ended up drilling the head off the offending screw. I was really worried about damaging the card but it worked out fine. I would try some of these other suggestions first though, all that vibration and the risk of a slip near gave me an ulcer!

Dam .. glad it worked out m8 ,
i did excactly the dsame thing on my 5870
ended up drilling it out.. was one of the screws on the end so didnt matter too much

Top thread... was just coming to ask. Having discovered many Torx 10 on my recovered PowerMac happily admit a Torx 15 and rotate freely! Will try araldite after I try the elastic band trick - which sounds bloody ingenious.

Well so far (now that I have a posidriv screwdriver) I have managed to get it down to just ONE offending (seriously stripped) screw holding down the backplate before I can put on my EK waterblock. I have tried the following on the last screw:

1) Rubber band trick - didnt work
2) Superglue screwdriver overnight - didnt work

My friend is bringing over epoxy putty stick tonight which I plan to fill my stripped screw head with and set my screwdriver into the putty overnight. If this doesn't work I do have the JML Screw Extractor set sat here ready for use with a powerdrill as a last resort.

It's encouraging (in the nicest possible way) to see that others have had issues with these 5xxx series of cards. Even using the right screwdriver, the remaing screws were a nightmare to undo - I have put waterblocks on a gajillion cards in the past and never had problems!!!

Glad to hear some of you have had success with this though I almost cryed when this first happened as I got a fantastic price on my 5870 (£280 delivered - and now theyve gone up to!).

Sweet - thanks to the JBL Screw extractor set and a power drill I was able to install my EK tonight!

Only thing is the performance isnt as great as I'd hoped but I might start another thread on that

So, anyone else stupid enough to do this (like I did) to your spanking new Radeon 5 series card - USE THE RIGHT SCREWDRIVER FOR THE JOB!!!

Thanks for all your help guys

Tom

Glad you got it sorted, those EK blocks are too expensive to be sitting in the box. :D

At stock the 5850 is about level with the 285 I think... once you get up to 1000 on the core the difference should be clear enough. I'll keep a look out for the thread in another forum though.

Pliers? Can't get my head around that one, what did you hope the pliers would do?

It's harsh that posidriv looks so similar to phillips, catches a lot of people out.

just an idea: drill a small pilot sized hole into the mashed screw. you can then get a small cross head screwdriver ( thin enough to fit in the hole drilled) with a blob of superglue. Wait for this to try then get some needlenosed pliers around the head of the screw to twist it out. it will also help to put some vasaline or butter around the screw as a lubricant. Also, cooling the screw will cause it to contract slightly so getting it in a fridge for a while before attempting may also help. never tried all of these at once before but individually they have worked for me!

which pozi screwdriver do I want to buy btw? I've so very nearly had this situation, and now I know its because "I'M DOING IT WRONG!" I would like to get the correct driver.

Link to one on screwfix would be nice, since I get discount for working in their IT department :)
