Strobing setup, what does one need?

I have a 40D and a 430EX.

What do I need for a good off camera flash setup.

I have nothing apart from the tripod my camera sits on, im assuming that will do until I can get something dedicated?

Say £100 max? Diffusers? Gel filters? Etc.

Been slightly inspired by a photo talk to do some more photography

Also, extension rings? If I bought a set for my 17-55 USM IS would it make it possible for Macro shots? [Bit knowledgeless in this area]

Can a 580EX II control a 430EX?? I thought when I was reading up about it it can be the master flash and control slave units?

Also extension rings any good? My 17-55USM IS would make a quality macro I recon

After some research only Canons extenders work with EF-S.

What sets do you lot recommend that keep all functions open, IE focus, aperture, etc.
