Strobing setup, what does one need?

I have a 40D and a 430EX.

What do I need for a good off camera flash setup.

I have nothing apart from the tripod my camera sits on, im assuming that will do until I can get something dedicated?

Say £100 max? Diffusers? Gel filters? Etc.

Been slightly inspired by a photo talk to do some more photography

Also, extension rings? If I bought a set for my 17-55 USM IS would it make it possible for Macro shots? [Bit knowledgeless in this area]

Buy yourself a brollie, and bracket to hold your flash and brollie on the tripod, then some cheap wireless triggers. Hey presto, wireless flash and you can difuse it through the brollie.

1x SB28 - On stick, shoot through brolly right 1/8+0.7
1x SB900 - On stick, small silver reflector brolly centre 1/16

Remote triggered via eBay 8 channel remotes

Can a 580EX II control a 430EX?? I thought when I was reading up about it it can be the master flash and control slave units?

Also extension rings any good? My 17-55USM IS would make a quality macro I recon

Yes if the 580ex II is on the camera.

There are much cheaper alternatives readily available. I don't know a single person that actually has Canon extension tubes. I can't remember exactly how much mine were, but they were under £5.

All extension tubes are are a hollow tube, it doesn't matter what make they are.

After some research only Canons extenders work with EF-S.

What sets do you lot recommend that keep all functions open, IE focus, aperture, etc.

I bought some generic brand ones for £5 on the bay and they worked fine with ef-s

As greedy123 posted, generic tubes work fine with EF-S, certain models of the Canon extender range only work with EF lenses however.

As long as the tubes have the pins to carry the data they will be transparent to the camera/lens.

Stacking extenders does tend to cause issues with the AF/E-TTL II/aperture etc.

I was under the impression the cheap tubes don't have the contacts required, therefore either requiring a lens with aperture ring or the "set the aperture with lens on camera then remove method"? Isn't this why the Kenko tubes are so popular at around £90 as they have the connections?

Also to the OP, it's obvious what you should do for your stobist requirements... Buy a 7D, instant off camera flash with the 430 then!!!

Of course this isn't the most sensible move budgetwise

Aye, the £5 tubes don't have the pins required, but there are generic tubes that do have the pins and are half the price of the kenko sets.

I think I've seen those, seems to be a good supply from Poland... The adverts I saw though we're unclear as to whether they controlled aperture. I shall have to have another look!
