Strongest x5 engine?

Nothing wrong with a 2000-2002 one just dont buy the bottom end cheapies for £6k!

You want a one or two owner tops car in excellent condition owned by somebody who couldnt give a stuff how much it cost to run - so run away if there any signs of it being owned by somebody who doesnt just throw money at it. This is the best way to give you the best chance at not owning a moneypit.
 
It's hard to find cars that fit that description over 8 years old though, so prepare yourself for bills regardless!
 
I don't mind paying for general maintenance, but yeah I'll try keep an eye out for a 1 or 2 owner.

I agree, which is why I might consider being as bold as to suggest that if you cant afford anything better than an 8+ year old one, you might want to buy something else..

They are very similar to E39's mechanically and if, lets say, mine got written off tommorrow and the only money I had to replace it was enough for an average 2001 model, I'd buy a Ford instead. I just think most of them are ruined or a liability at this sort of age unless you get a rare 1 owner car or you bought it yourself years ago/have known the owner or something.
 
Funny you say that as i recently spotted a new shape mondeo estate ghia 2.0tdci for £9k, but (theres always a but) with 130k on the clock, but thats a 1 owner and full dealer service history.
 
These are getting rather annoying around here. I keep seeing old ones with massive chrome rims on them or bull bars with rally style fogs on them for show(not even wired up).

I still love the presence though!
 
Yea I've noticed that, they are really starting to appear down here now, mostly X, Y and 51 plate examples with stupid wheels, silly bars and weirdly those rubbish fake angel eye headlights. Some even have Lexus lights :(
 
Just a heads up, my friend had a 51 plate 3.0D on slightly under 100k. He ended up having to sell it on quickly at a low, low price due to something being wrong with the engine meaning it was going to pack up shortly...

No idea what the problem was but apparently it's not exactly rare. Just a friendly warning that maybe detailed research into common faults is required.

Wonder if he did a dannyW stunt!

Sounds to me like it's someone being hit with a big bill for turbo/injectors and running a mile. At 100k that's what I'd be thinking anyway.

You think BMW would be allowed to sell a car with an engine that broke at 100k?
 
Knowing they guy I bet it was close to being a DannyW flex, but it was part-ex'd for an E class so it wasn't to an unsuspecting private citizen at least.

Not sure if it was turbos or injectors or whatever but it was something big which wouldn't have been worth the cost to fix. The guys not exactly poor and had put about 1-2k of mods in it (TVs & Audio etc...) and shot it off with everything in (except two subs).
 
It's the same engine as 3 and 5 series. Other than normal problems did he say what this common problem is?
