Struggling to chose a new phone based on camera quality

Google compression is really good. I read an article some time ago comparing the originals from a phone and the compressed versions on Google photos. You really had to be looking to find the differences.
And I'd agree. However a 2mb jpg isn't going to look as good as a 6mb jpg (just did a quick comparison of one of my own photos with grass in it). It's good, but you can see differences and it would explain why some of those photos look below what you'd expect for that phone's camera.

Unpopular opinion. Forget about your phone serving your photography needs, and grab something like an Sony RX100 for those trips you want to capture some nice photos. I see my phone as a device for quick snaps but wouldn't use it for capturing those special memories.

Phone makers are pushing the camera as the feature worth upgrading for each year, if you remove that from the equation you can get a solid performing phone for a very good price and use it for many years, instead of getting caught in the upgrade cycle.

I personally prefer a single device which is always on me ready for any moment and so prefer a high end phone with a great camera rather than separate devices, but yes for sure that is the best mix of quality etc

I moved on from the A70 due to being unhappy with the camera. Tried a P30 Pro which I liked the camera of but didn't get along with their software and then picked up a Note 10+ 5G which is a keeper for me. Nice step up in camera quality, build quality is excellent and wireless charging is nice.

I totally get that approach and for the majority of people that works fine. For me, if i know I'm going to an event or travelling somewhere, I bring my camera. I very rarely find myself with an opportunity for great photography and haven't bought my camera. Day out to a London museum, bring the camera, trip to the local nature reserve, bring the camera, family BBQ, bring the camera, you get the idea. The results are very special and each photo has been curated and crafted so to me they hold much more meaning then a simple snap on the phone.

I tried using just an iPhone 11 Pro to capture my sons 4th birthday, and it didn't hold a candle to my mirrorless camera.

Seconding a dedicated camera. Some of those would have been cracking had they been taken with a half decent dedicated camera. They look like you specifically went hiking or out of your way to get there too, so an RX100 mentioned above, or even a Ricoh GR (which isn't that much bigger than an RX100) could easily be thrown into a bag or carried around in a little camera pouch without much fuss.

Personally I would go with any of Huawei's devices P range ( Possibly Mate30 Pro also ) and shoot in Pro mode to eliminate any over saturation etc. They've all got nice large sensors which are somewhat more important than massive pixel counts.

It is a shame the Pixels don't do wide-angle lenses, maybe Pixel 5 will have one - we've gave them enough feedback.

Also, Grab a cheap Nokia 808 - still holds it's own :)

I run, bike and go climbing a lot so not having to carry a phone and camera about with me and for what I do with photos a high end camera on a phone would do.

I'm going to hold out on the pixel 5 in hopes it has wide-angle as it will probably suit all my needs
