Struggling to enjoy gaming?

36yo

I got the Playstation Plus last year when lockdown started, but the only games I've clicked with have been the Tomb Raider ones, World of Warships and Worms.

Other than that, I play OpenRA on my MacBook, and miss Age of Empires. Mostly into strategy games really. I bought Civilisation, and it seems to turn my laptop into a heater, and I'm not the best fan of turn based games so quit that.

Sooooo, since I work in finance, I've taken to low cost investing with my spare time. I only use about 5% of my savings, and as its grown, I've moved it back to long term funds so I can 'forget' about it to an extent and not have to make decisions on it.

I would really like a newer strategy game for my Mac though.

we get this thread every year, gaming is trash, graphics moved forward the rest of the stuff that matters didn't

See I think it's slightly different, I think gaming is still good and certain developers still put out good stuff and actually some of the console games have come out with great storylines but I feel they're hidden by the sheer volume of rinse and repeat franchises and slight derivatives on the same game. As such, those good games are harder to find now. I seriously struggle finding my next good game now and rely on noseying around this forum to find them as most stores are full of rehashed garbage that you have to sift through to find the good stuff.

We get a lot of threads like this. It isn't uncommon. I think age is one of many things that drives the ebb and flow of your life, and how gaming fits in it, but there are other factors - children, relationships, work, finances, other interests etc...

At the age of 42 I do play a lot less than I used to. I've accepted that and I ignore the pressure to play all the latest and greatest titles. I upgrade my hardware less frequently, but I still try to get decent stuff when I get round to it.

I put a lot of it down to having a family - they keep me more occupied than I would have been as a younger man, and by the time I sit down in the evening I want to spend it in the pleasant company of the lovely Mrs bfar, who isn't really into gaming herself.

Every once in a while a title comes along that I can bury myself in, and it's still very satisfying.I casually play some console games with the kids too, which can be a laugh, but it wouldn't necessarily be stuff I'd choose myself. I'm certain as I get older and the pressures of family life ease (which is already beginning to happen) I'll start finding more time for games and other hobbies.

I'd echo those that say try something different.

I too, grew up with Golden Eye in my late teens, so have had the whole experience from asteroids through to today.

At one point it was PES with 6ish people in someone's living room playing 2v2 in rotation, then that evolved to online as lives intruded.

Then i played a lot of online gaming, driving and FPS before moving onto an MMO for a couple of (single) years.

Now I'm 44, i prefer a slower pace of game that i can dip into and out as and when.

Civilisation, Foootball Manager, that sort of thing.

VR has re-vitalised gaming for me. It's like taking gaming back to the early days where everything was new and fresh and each day brought new genres and gameplay designs.

My problem is no matter what I play I can only play a game for about 20 minutes. now I've about 30 games maybe spread over 5 ssds but my attention span just isn't there anymore.so id just watch movies when id get bored.

The only games I play now are through GeForce Now. No need for an expensive gaming pc for me. The results are pretty good. If I want a game I will buy it cheap and make sure it’s compatible first.

Its called finally growing up. With a sprinkle of over hyped, microtransactioned, copy and pasted crap that is most of todays gaming scence. I've been like it for about the past 5 years. But then I picked up RDR2 Xmas and loved playing it while off work on a evening with a beer whilts the other half watched crp on Disney+ and just got into Warzone with a few friends I used to play FPS with back in the day.

Its a over marketed, heartless, souless industry now rammed full of nobodys on youtube crying out for views and attention. Desperate to be the next 'Shroud'.

Give something like RDR2 a go, its like games from back in the day. Lots of depth, amazing visuals and story and as im a old fart now the slow pace suits me down to the ground, RDR2, Witcher 3, GTA5 up there with the top games of the last decade.

I'm in similar situation as well. Just like the OP I've just upgraded my PC after 6 years and the only game I play is Rimworld. Other than slightly faster loading there's no real difference in performance. £2k (inc new monitors) well spent :D

That moment when you sit down to play a game and you think to yourself "god what the hell am I achieving in life". There goes the 'off' button.
Allowing the all pervasive concept that your actions must be productive to leak into your free time is a bad idea
Every waking moment of your life need not be a great achievement

Its a sorry state of affairs when sensible soccer is still better than any FIFA game, and Elite Frontier is better than Elite Dangerous.

Graphics doth not make a game my son.

34 here and Warzone is my go to at the moment and has been since lockdown started! Its great fun with a group of mates, even if it is broken and full of hackers. Kind of adds to the fun sometimes :D

I'm really tempted to get a Nintendo Switch. I love my Nintendo 3DS, and something about Nintendo games makes me really enjoy them.

I am in a similar position ( 34 here ), but every now and again a game peaks my interest and has me absorbed. FF7 Remake was a wonderful experience mostly.

the key is to find something different. not the same old thing. also try to play with others. often playing with other people can be more fun the actual game sometimes.
Indeed. VR did it for me..... Funnily enough having VR (whilst forever killing some genres for me on a screen) means that the few non VR games I have I am appreciating again.

My problem is I still buy all the new games and new gear (got a 3090last week). No idea why as I won't get value out of it.

Really been enjoying going back to basics with my lad too with games like Mario on the nes and SNES.
