I know I'm better off going in to a garage to get this sorted but I figured I may as well post on here first for some ideas, and to possibly save myself some money.
Car is a 2003 Focus Mk1 TDCI 1.8 with 105k miles. I only have this problem when it's below roughly 5c outside, and gets progressively worse below that. When it's about -10c or worse outside it would sound really strained and splutter to life. If the car has been driven recently (i.e during the same day) it will start with no issues at all.
It will start within a few seconds but during that time it sounds like it's struggling to turn over- the diagnostic mode on the mileage counter reports 8.8v whilst cranking and when it does finally start a big plume of light grey smoke shoots out the back. When the car was left standing for two days the voltage was 11.8v before starting- after starting it shoots up to mid 14v.
Glow plugs perhaps? Or a dud battery? Any advice is appreciated.
