So, been a while since i upgraded so took the plunge and ordered a few things.

E6600
P5B Deluxe/WiFi
1gb DDR2 6400
Seagate 7200.10 Sata2 320

But now im stuck as to what graphics card to go for, ive narrowed it down to:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-014-EA

and

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-034-BG

Seems the BFG is a better deal, as it cheaper and has lifetime warranty, but its not in stock. The EVGA is a bit more expensive but not enough so to bother me about it, yet it has a 10yr warranty, which doesnt again bother me as in 10 years time i cant imagine PCIe will still be here...

So, any advice would be appreciated!

The BFG looks to be a better buy as it is cheaper and has a stock overclock. However I've only dealt with EVGA and XFX before...both were awesome experiences....but I hear BFG is great as well.

BTW...10 years is a long time, who has a graphics card 10 years let alone 1 or 2?

I looked at the Ati ones, but im thinking future wise and id like one of the BFGs or EVGA ones as they have a decent warranty, and i have yet to hear of a bad experiance from anyone having to deal with them.

As a matter of Interest, Gibbo if you see this do you know when your getting the BFGs back in stock?

Yeah, i realise that. Once ive got it built and my current rig split and sold, im going to get another gig of ram and the video card.

Its not for gaming, i dont game at all. But ive never had less than 2gb and wont start now :)

tbh, if it not for gaming I'd go on board if available, a 6200 (works great in my Media Centre) or 7300.

If your not gaming then why spend over £40? and you can have it silent as an added bonus :D

Are ther any apps that will use GPU's besides gaming?

Not really, but ive never been a fan of Onboard graphics so try to steer clear of them. I know £200 seems a lot for none graphical use, but i do video edit a lot, and do imaging work for work now and then, so it wont be a total waste.

Plus the odd game of Hearts never goes a miss ;) lol

But graphics and video editing is all 2d work. Your GPU won't even switch to 3d mode. You'd be much better off getting something cheap and giving the rest of the money to me :D

Go with EVGA i'd say
Their step-up program is amazing :) I know it's unlikely you'l want to upgrade within 90 days since you don't game etc. but never hurts to have :)
And at least the step-up part of their forums are great. From what i'vebeen reading, EVGA staff check it regularly, and if a problem arises, tehy ask you to email them and it's solved quickly. Again, not much personal experience here, but what i've been reading sounds great :)

(upgrading quad SLI to sli 8800 GTX under *** step-up so a tad biased ;))
(ok, taht was unnecessary but i'm happy im getting them :D)

Stick with the onboard graphics until you need the power. A card for no reason is just going to be noisier and depreciate massively. With onboard, you haven't lost anything, and you can pop something in as soon as you need to.

Agreed - I'd save on the graphics and go 7600 or equivelent. It would be overkill to spend any more than £100 on a card if the most you plan to do is vid editing.

I game pretty much exclusively so happily use the power but concentrating on getting that extra gb of memory would be most important for your use! :)

If video editing/CAD then you are looking at the wrong cards! In fact, I read somewhere these ones are 'pathetic' for that kind of work :( Should be looking at ATI's FireGL & or NVIDIA's Quadro.

IMO invest in 2GB RAM & maybe a E6700!

Graphics card, maybe the Sapphire X1600 Pro HDMI/SPDIF 256MB GDD3 because its got HDMI (future proof-ish) :D

Well, i have £200 for it and it will be one of either the BFG or EVGA, whether it will be suited for current use or not. There is always a chance that i will start gaming again, so id like to have it in reserve that if i do, i can :)

Id never buy the very latest card, as that seriously would be a waste. But £200 or so, is fine for me and its within my budget easily.

Thanks for all the advice, at the moment i think its going to be the EVGA one. But it wont be until after christmas i think, so i will still do some reading.

As i said before i dont want anything that isnt BFG or EVGA as their support and warranties seem to be second to none.

Seems we're very different. I wouldn't get any other than the cheapest card of a given model, and add a zalman. Cheapest, coolest and quietest, and I've never needed a warranty on a PC component.

By the end of Christmas you may even be able to get a second hand GX2 for that - i just got my EVGA one for £225 all in and i love it! :D

Equally - by then you may find that the cards you're looking at now are even cheaper!!! ;)
