Stuck in 4 bit colour on XP

Just installed a new graphics card on a friends machine. Tried using the latest drivers, and they've obviously failed. Tried uninstalling and rebooting, but it still says in Device Manager that the card is installed so when I go to install older drivers it's going spazzy. As I'm stuck in 4 bit, and internet explorer is loaded with loads of junk tool bars it crashes before I can get to the nvidia page.

The card is a geforce 240 gt.

If I go into properties I can't change the colour bit or the resolution. Any ideas friends?x

What graphics card did they have before the swap? were the old drivers removed?

personally i would use system restore to before you swapped the card.
make sure that the old drivers were removed.
install card.
use latest drivers.

Cheers guys. Couldn't do a system restore before swapping the card. It literally died. No on board graphics on the mobo either so it was basically a case of plug in and see if I could get it working. Will try out your advice, and get back to you with the results.

PS it was an old piece of junk. 256 ddr1 or 2?

OK so I booted in safe mode, uninstalled, deleted all nvidia files, and rebooted back into safe mode, reinstalled, and it SAID that the driver instalation was successful, but on booting into standard Windows, I found it was actually still a failure.

On booting into Windows I am prompted "please update the display driver and program."

Please help!
