First of all i did not intend this to be an emo thread.

How many of you have been stuck in a rut for a period of your life or still are and have you ever got out of it ?

most people will have. depending on your outlook on life and your proactivity it will affect you differently.

also it depends on where the rut is, whether its work/relationship/other etc

If you're stuck in a rut only you can get out of it.

Yes from time to time I've been in one but I've taken the steps to get out of it. The biggest issue is identifying what the root cause is.

In what sense?

A job sense? A relationship sense? Or are you talking about anything? :p

I've been stuck in a job I didnt like, but didnt have the means to leave, eventually we all got made redundant, then I had no work for 6 months, but I eventually got another job :)

I've also been a massive depressive in younger life due to issues with parents, but eventually I learned to think and tell myself to get through things, and that everything life throws at you is just a hurdle you need to learn to get past basically.

But meh :p

Set yourself goals and ask your GP to refer you for cognitive behavioral therapy.

Saying that, you've hardly given us much to work on. Some people claim to be 'stuck in a rut' just because they've had a tough couple of days at work or so...

Stuck in a rut in general life where you have no motivation no direction only negativity where you only have the black dog of depression for company that always comes barking at the door. When your young and clueless about what you want to do in life that kind of sad rut.

I got out of a major rut last year. Things got pretty bad, i was self-employed at the time, but work was few and far between and i was living very close to the edge, lots of unpaid bills, debts, i was smoking too much, staying up too late and sleeping all day, usual stuff.

Anyway I decided to quit smoking, start working out, sort myself out. 6 Months later I had moved into a much nicer house, got a steady part time job, 6 months after, up to present, ive got myself a full time job now which I love and I've finally got some security and money with which to enjoy myself with :)

I basically vowed to look after myself better physically, and well the rest took care of itself.

Life is one long rut with periods of the rut being shallower than other parts. You can mask the rut of existence by buying shiny distracting things. Which mostly everyone does in Western society. Ultimately though the distraction doesn't last long and you end up still in your rut several years later wondering how you acquired so much ****.

Yes in one now really

Don't like the job I have as the pay is rubbish its mind numbing and boring have no real challenge and I am still at home at the tender age of 26!

Need to work on sorting it out, always looking for a new job always trying to re do my cv to a point I am happy with it.

Starting a basic Open Uni course to see if I like that and need to work on social stuff as well!

Easier said then done but you just need to try and look at something to work towards give you something to do and put ya self out there a bit.

It's difficult not to look at the negatives in such a situation but theres some positives.

I have a roof over my head, I at least have a job and earn some money and still manage to put a very small amount away for savings/pension and have the things I need.

Rest is up to me to get.

*edit*

Can I just point something out...

There seems to be a lot of pressure asserted from society on what people should be doing by a certain age and what stage of their life they should be at by so in so.

Everyone is different and these forums don't always help when you see some of the things said and other peoples lives and how they live them. Sometimes it appears theres a bit of snobbery and noses are turned when people aren't doing what is "expected" of them.

I have never really had an idea of what I wanted to do with myself and its hard to motivate yourself into doing something when you don't know what that thing should be. It is a bit of a catch 22 and can be annoying and difficult to break out of the routine.

There is a difference between people who want to do something though and those that are happy to do nothing and expect it all, make sure you are in the first category of people and not the latter as thats a worse place to be.

Set yourself some goals, get some friends.

I was in a rut after uni. No job, moved back in with parents, no money. Horrible part of my life. However, starting to get back on my feet as I now have money coming in and socialising more as a result.

When you're in a rut it feels like a struggle to get out of it but you will get out provided you put effort into doing something.

I have been in some major ruts and for me getting financially independent was the main factor that i knew i had to deal with. Once i had a job that was ok and i was paying rent, then I was in a position to start dealing with all my other issues. But it takes time and a lot of issues are still not fixed. When i did not have a job i just got trapped in self loathing cycle of misery and this is not a good position to be in when looking for a job, because no one wants to hire a miserable git. So it took me three months to get a job and after 15 interviews my fake smile finally got me a job.
