Long term phone contract at home means its not possible to go with a different ISP, much to my disgust, so getting the best out of a bad deal we are getting fibre optic, up to 40mb, supposedly unlimited with no traffic shaping (yet to confirm this). Done some preliminary digging and it seems they send an engineer out who isntalls a bt modem and then connects a talktalk router to it? Is that correct? I will be speaking to them later on to get all the details, is there anything else I should be making sure of? I've seen a bit about LLU on the forums but can't say I understand what that is :P

I'm also assuming the hardware they use is probably pants, and I'll be wanting to replace it pretty quick?

I believe it is pretty much. I can't however get Infinity with the TalkTalk phone line and the contract with TalkTalk annoyingly isn't up for at least another 12 months.

LLU relates to adsl style broadband, your on fibre optic so not linked.

should be fine, just make sure its tested when hes there and the speeds are close enough to what has been said, fibre optic shouldn't have a drop off like adsl (ie adsl= max 8mb so can be anything up to 8mb, fibre optic 40mb should be near enough 40mb).

if you catch him while he's there make sure he checks the line stats and confirms there ok, run a ping test/speed test if he doesnt while hes there to confirm speeds.

Yeah I think Talktalk take over the lease of the line from BT. Becareful when you cancel will TalkTalk because they may completely disconnect your line which may result in you needing to pay a line installation fee to your next provider.

It's not me. I have a seperate phone line with pipex as our current ISP. Pipex had been taken over by Tiscali, who have been taken over by talktalk, hence wanting to change. The main phone line is managed by someone else who signed up to talktalk as they needed to call abroad regularly and talktalk had the best offer at the time.

Seemed silly keeping the extra phone line with talktalk isp when I would be paying £30 a month in line rental and isp charge for something that is already included in the phone package on the main line... So we are now getting the best net connection we can get on the main line. Talktalk fibre optic adds £10 a month to the package, so we're saving £20 a month.

As long as it does the job its supposed to, it's winwin.

Yeah they always say they will give you the best connection but they lie to you to get you to sign up with them. They told me I would deffinatly get minimum of 17meg connection never got half that and the connection constantly dropped all the time they just suck their cs is rubbish.

Half of 17meg is more than I'm getting at the mo ;)

I also can't get fibre optics on the second line, so the best I can do is either swap over to BT, pay £14 line rental, £35 for unlimited faster internet or whatever its called to get up to 8meg... or disconnect the second line, cancel the pipex(talktalk) isp on that one, and pay talktalk a tenner extra for up to 40meg.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Got to say I've had 24Mbps (get about 18Mbps real world) LLU Talk Talk for about a year and I've never had any problem with it at all (touch wood).

I can get "optic boost" now but I'm not really sure I need it, shame Talk Take haven't said anything about 40Mbps down 10Mbps up, still saying 2Mbps up which is a pain!

Can see myself flipping over to BT at some point, especially if they go up to 80Mbps and Talk Talk are still stuck at 40Mbps

BT Openreach’s NGA infrastructure,
currently mainly comprising its FTTC
network is now being rolled out. BT
Openreach is required to offer a wholesale
NGA product on equivalent terms and
conditions for all communications providers.
At present it is not subject to formal price
controls. The current wholesale product
is GEA, which TalkTalk is using to
provide customers with its Fibre Optic
“Boost” product. The development
of this product further is the subject of
discussions between TalkTalk, BT
Openreach and Ofcom, aiming to
improve the customer experience and
to make its economics more attractive
for providers and customers.

TalkTalk are awful if you have problems, but if you're lucky and your connection stays up then you'll be fine. Watch your billing, worst company in the uk according to several sources. Other than that, you have probably got the best deal for the money!
