Student dentist

My sister got some work done at a dental school and all seemed to go well. Overall felt like she got taken good care of, and given the student was under direct supervision from a professor(?) they potentially did a more thorough / by the book job than a qualified dentist operating on their own would have done...

If its anything like hairdressers they have full supervision by their lecturers they aren't just going to let them loose in your mouth with a hammer and chisel if there was anything like that locally I'd probably go

I had a student dentist when I broke a tooth aged 10 and went to A&E. So probably not the same case as OP is describing.

Ultimately I had the nerve scraped out and a basic plug put on. Went to my dentist in the morning and he said they hadn't done it completely and it would have got infected. Bear in mind though, this was probably an unsupervised student i.e. new graduate or whatever, at 1am, in 1997. I expect a legitimate business/service would be a lot better.

I had a bad experience with a newly qualified dentist who messed up what should have been a simple tooth removal and had to go and get help from other dentists to finish the job. I believe a lack of practical experience may have been a factor

You can get root canals on NHS for about £300 last time I checked. Generally it’s advised to get them done privately but if money is tight…

The worst thing about being told you need a root canal is that you then have to get a crown as well which is another £800

I had one of those student hairdressers nearly take my ear off with a pair of scissors.

£1k is nothing for more peace of mind when it comes to dental work, especially something like a root canal.

I'm sure the student dentist will be fine, but personally I wouldn't risk it. It's bad enough having to go to the dentist for work like this, without possibly having to have it done again. Yes, I'm aware that even experienced dentists can mess things up now and again.

I had a root canal done via dental hospital students about 8-9 years ago. They were brilliant, really lovely and they did a good job... BUT... It took ages. I mean it REALLY took a long time: all told it was 4 appointments (might even have been 5) of around 90 minutes each (which is a long time to be tilted slightly backwards!), with a lot of trial and error when it came to drilling down the root, lots of x-rays and supervision from their consultant. I'm still very grateful for the work they did but it did end up being a lot of time off work.

By contrast I had another one done by my NHS dentist a few years ago and he did it in about 20 mins for £275.

I had to have a tooth removed and was reffered by my normal dentist to another clinic. When I got there they asked if it was ok to be done by a student dentist as they were a training practice, but they'd be supervised by a fully qualified. An hour in and she couldn't get it all out, the tooth had fragmented and the last but wouldn't budge, despite what felt like cartoon like yanking and pulling. The qualified dentist had to take over and got it out in 5 minutes.

All I learned from it was to go in clean shaven, all the yanking from different angles kept trapping my beard and it was more pain on my face as they kept trapping hair, than I felt in my mouth.

Had similar happen to me with a qualified dentist, the boss had to come in and sort the mess out. First and only time having root treatment, put me off the practice but couldn’t get a place anywhere else locally.

Not a dentist but i had a student phlebotomist. on needle 6 i got the courage to say id had enough and get someone good to get the sample :(
