I finally paid the remainder of my student loan on 22/02 and even received a "congratulations" over the phone.

Advise from the person I spoke to at SLC regarding claiming back the money that would be taken in my March pay was to create a letter with my student support number, name and DOB. I also had to enclose the March payslip and state 'refund' in the letter.

I was then to post it to
100 Bothwell Street
Glasgow
G2 7JD

This was done however I received a letter dated 16th March that I had almost paid my loan off. I contacted them on 26/03 and was advised to ignore this letter however to claim get a refund SLC would require ALL payslips since April 2015. Different advise from before.

Its a good job I have them and can photocopy them all to submit. I imagine I will need to do the same when I pay off more of my loan in April

Has anyone else had a similar experience when attempting to claim back money from Student Loans Company?

I know of a few people who have had similar issues. One still had them taking payments over a year after he'd cleared is debt with them.

I got a letter dated sometime in August saying my student loan was almost paid off and to arrange direct debits for the remainder, I only opened this in December as it was at my parents!

Called them up beginning of January, went through my payslips since the beginning of the financial year and was told my last payment would be January. The guy on the phone said a stop notice would be issued to HMRC and then my employer as well, to stop student loan deductions.

No such stop letter was sent out until I called them a couple of weeks ago and I've now received a letter detailing that a stop notice has been sent out etc.

Last week I sent off a years worth of payslips for claiming back two months of student loan repayments. Apparantly they're down to about 7 working days to process, fingers crossed it goes smoothly!

No joke.

Is joke from Latvia. I tell now.

Joke: Latvian try to cross river. Has dog, potatoes, and dead son's body. Can only take two across river at one time. If he leave dog with potatoes or corpse, dog eat them. Is very sad. Also is not good boat.

My son has been in a long standing discussion regarding his student loan, last year he got a statement that had fees for Bedford Uni that he shouldnt need to pay because he was only there for 2 months and a fee for Herts Uni 2nd year that he didn't do. It has taken nearly 2 years for Student Finance to clear Beds Uni fee but he still has the second year to pay for Herts, he contacted Herts and they dont have him on their records even for the first year! but Student Finance wont budge until Herts get in touch but they wont as they say they have no record of my son. Its ridiculous.

This is why I track how much I'm paying off using the online portal and enter the amounts each month from my payslip. Granted I've still got quite a way to go but it's ~£150 a month I'm looking forward to getting back!

I contacted them to find out how much I owed and was told I paid it off 7 months ago. I only contacted them on a whim as I had no idea how much I owed.

Did the payslip thing and got it all refunded no problem.

Yeah, I'll hopefully get back around £300 for the two month overpayment, and then a nice little 'pay rise' once it stops coming off hopefully before next pay day!

:D.

I still ow 28k. LOL

As a parent of two kids I'm highly considering taking out a £60k loan for the pair of them and using it as a deposit on a house somewhere to get them started in BTL. It seems to make more sense than spending it on a degree when they probably won't have a decent job to come out to anyway.

Those of you checking online - note that the balance won't show any payments from the current tax year and you'll need to use their calculator and input your monthly payments to estimate the balance as it stands today.

The money is only sent to the SLC annually and they produce a statement once a year so if you don't move to direct debit this is how overpayments occur - the SLC doesn't have real time information and needs evidence that you've paid the full balance.

If you make an overpayment in the summer if they've had time to process this year you'll only need to supply payslips dating back to April.

Yup paid mine off back in February 2015, then had trouble cancelling the monthly payment, then they said I still owed them money, then they sent me a letter that was so badly written I couldn't tell if I owed them money or they owed me money. In the end I just got payroll to remove my student loan from the system and just ignored them.

10 months later I logged in to see this, which will just get written off when I retire lol. They truly are a bunch of useless ****ers

The balance will be updated every time you enter a monthly deduction, but on the main page it shows the amount from the last statement.

EDIT: just checked, £17,879.39 outstanding :(

Mines coming down quite quickly now, rang up the other month to switch to direct debit but as they average out your yearly income to a monthly figure it was a bit more than I fancied paying vs the current payroll deduction. Will look at it again in a few months.
