Im planning to get a railcard to use to get to work everyday, but on the UCAS site it says there is no minimum charge in July and August, but there is no mention of this on the railcard FAQ

It only mentions returns so if there still is a minimum charge ill use two singles instead ha ha!

Any ideas on the minimum charge?

Cheers :)

I don't understand? You can use your railcard on any ticket you buy.

No you can't.

Please note that no Railcard, child or other discounts are available on our lowest Standard and First Advance Fares. If you hold a valid Railcard, please check the terms and conditions of the ticket you wish to purchase before proceeding, by clicking the ticket description

That's lame serios. I assumed you could use it on every ticket, because I've never had a problem with Midland Mainline, and I remember a mate used her railcard on a £2 ticket going to South London lol...

Minimum fares / Time restrictions
Travelling before 10am minimum fares:
This applies to all tickets except the Off-Peak Day Travelcard (All Zones only) which has separate minimum fare conditions. On or before 10am Monday to Friday (except Public Holidays and during July and August) there is a minimum fare that applies to all purchases with a Young Persons Railcard. This is either £8.00 or £16.00 depending on the type of ticket being purchased. Most will be £8.00, but the following ticket types have a minimum fare of £16.00: Standard Day Returns, Standard Open Returns, European Open Returns.

For example: If an undiscounted Single ticket costs £8.50 and the normal 1/3 discount makes the fare £5.60, you will have to pay the minimum fare of £8.00.

If an undiscounted Standard Open Return costs £27.00, then you will get the full 1/3 discount as the discounted fare of £17.80 is higher than the £16.00 minimum fare.

If you travel regularly before 10am, then a weekly or monthly season ticket may be more appropriate.

Off-Peak Day Travelcards (All Zones only):
Before 10am Monday to Friday (except Public Holidays and in July and August) the minimum fare is £8.00. At and after 10am on Monday to Friday and as advertised on Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays and during July and August the minimum fare is £4.80.

etter still you can use it anytime on weekends, Public Holidays and during the week. The only restriction is that if you travel at or before 10am Monday to Friday a minimum fare will apply (although this doesn’t apply during July and August).

So do I pay the £8 minimum or the 2/3 off a return @ £10.50

i ******* hate midland mainline - theyre a bunch of *****. we pre booked a ticket from london to notts for like £25 but had to get on an hour early because we found out my mate's boyfriend had been injured at our house. they checked tickets and said we had to pay full £60 each!!

Yep that happened to me on many occasions. It's a complete rip-off.

There is defnitely not supposed to be a minimum charge using a Young Person's Railcard during July and August. I know this because I'm travelling to London daily at the moment - the full cost of the return ticket is £16.20, and using my railcard it costs £10.70. In Setember the cost with the railcard will be £16, which is the minimum charge.

On some occasions the YPR can save you masses of money. I went to manchester at the weekend and bought a on-the-spot ticket. Normally I would have to buy a standard open return, because I was travelling at peak times. This would cost I think over £150. However if you have a railcard you can use a saver ticket (costing about £60) on any Virgin Trains service, even at peak times, plus you get the discount on the saver ticket, making it about £40 return. It turns the price from unaffordable and ridiculous to perfectly feasible.

Ah, so this hasn't come into effect yet? I have a YP railcard and use it on every journey, inc. my journeys from Notts->Leics which are dirt cheap anyway but with a railcard cuts it down nicely. Same with my return from Hinckley<->Birmingham over the weekend. Cost ~£8

That doesn't make them rubbish, you had a pre-booked ticket for a certain time and went on a different train which was at a different time which you didn't have a ticket for. I don't see the problem.

Trains suck. Never buy the pre-booked train only tickets. My flatmate bought a ticket to Edinburgh for £12 but his tube train broke down, he was 5 minutes late for the train and they made him buy a full price single ticket that was £98!!

This is why I drive. Quicker too!

He's a bit silly if he didn't realise that the reason he got the massive discount was because he had to go on a particular train!
