Yep if your total non-savings + savings income (eg interest) is above the PA then you'll pay income tax.

I called the HMRC earlier today and they told me that my friend needs a P46 to claim back tax for this year, and request a P60 from her employer and send that in with a cover letter to claim tax back from last year

That is the easy part done... now the hard part is getting her to sort all this out
