Studio flats - pros and cons?

I want to stay in my university city after graduating, but I want to live on my own, or with one other friend - however, one and two bedroom flats in Canterbury are shockingly expensive to rent...

...there are, however, a few affordable studios in Canterbury and the surrounding areas. Are they liveable? Entertainable? Smell of food the entire time?

I could never live in a studio flat. I'm not claustrophobic but spending so much time in what's essentially a single room would drive me insane.

If money is tight, why not a house share?

Some people don't like seeing other people's washing up left in the sink, pubes in the shower, and soiled underpants on the bathroom floor :p

There's a lot to be said for personal space and privacy :)

There's a lot to be said for living somewhere which doesn't resemble a prison cell!
 
Don't live in a studio flat unless you really want to eat, sleep, cook, watch tv, have people over all in the same room? If you want to be on your own rent a 2 bed flat with a friend and get a lock for you're door for when you want some privacy. You'll get a lot more for your money, and it wont be so lonely.
 
^I've shared with students for three years now, had enough, want a place of my own!
I might get lonely but if I do I can always pop round a friend's. He offered me a room but he'll still be a student and likes to make a lot of noise and mess :/
 
Well I'd be working in the day, so just evenings and weekends really.
Housemates are an idea but I just want to live alooooone :( I'm fed up of the mess and arguments that spoil good friendships.
 
From the people I know who live in Studio Flats, they're bloody expensive to heat in Winter due to them being a single large space.
 
I lived in a studio flat for a year and a half and it was great while I was there. It had a seperate bathroom and kitchen (good size) so wasn't all bad. I had to move the sofa EVERY NIGHT in order to pull down the bed (which folded down from the wall)

I wouldn't do it again though.
 
Liveable? Certainly [though stop thinking in terms of 'rooms' and start thinking in terms of 'areas' :D].

Entertainable? As in having people over? Probably not.

Having lived in a one-room flat, I would summarise that it's fine if you're on your own [you adapt], but imagine it would be hellish with more than one occupier [it's not as if you can go to another room if you want some 'me' time. Well, there's the bathroom... :D]
 
There's nothing wrong with studio apartments if that's what you want. Everybody has to start somewhere and if you want your own space then it's up to you how you divide it. Personally, i dont care if it's one room with a seperate bathroom or whatever. I just want a space where i can put all my stuff without fear of it being broken, borrowed or left where i cant find it; and something that i can call my home.

You've got the rest of your life to build walls between each area :)
 
I couldn't do it. I'd rather share with people I didn't know than live in a studio, unless perhaps if it was a REALLY nice and big studio flat with a separate kitchen. If the area is big then it's relatively easy to partition the space with a counter/shelving/temporary partition to split the room up. The one open space where EVERYTHING you have is located in would just run me down.

But instead of going to that expense and effort, I'd much rather spend it on a proper flat.

This is the same for me, almost exactly. I lived in a studio flat for a year or so, with a seperate kitchen and bathroom. It was ok, but I wouldn't do it again. My subsequent 3 houses have all been house shares and I much prefer it. I've never had the problems you describe, mainly because I don't live with students and thus we respect one another enough to tidy up after ourselves and not use / move other peoples things without asking.
 
you could place an add in the paper:

*Looking for flat mate must not eat or have pubes*

i dont think living in 1 room is that much of problem as long as you dont want to entertain lots of people at the same time. also they must be easier to keep clean.

Or you could just find some1 in a position like yours who looking for a housemate who isn’t just gross
