I am thinking of getting 2 of the KRK Vxt 8 studio monitors and the KRK 12sHO sub. They would be connected to the Audiolab M-DAC. What do people think?

What will you be using the system for?

Another combination you can look at is the JBL LSR4328P Active Studio Monitors and JBL LSR4312SP Active Reference Sub

I wouldnt. Monitor speakers dont sound that good (they're not meant to).

That's not really true. They are neutral, that is not the same as bad sounding.

They will not mask poor mixing/mastering which most hi-fi speakers will. Brilliantly mixed stuff will sound exactly how it was envisioned by the mixer (depending on how good the monitors are and how well treated your room is).

I prefer to listen to music on my JBL LSR305 to almost anything else (although they lack a bit of bass for some dance music).

No real problem with using monitors for just listening to music but they are expensive for "hi-fi" speakers.

^ Agreed

I also use monitors for listening to music but I can see why people might prefer hifi speakers because they aren't as neutral. Nevertheless monitors never fail to impress either, depending on which ones you get of course :p For thousands of pounds it's fair to say you will be blown away.

Although if you'll only be listening to music then it's worth considering a hifi setup for cheaper, which is why I asked what you'll be using them for.

Yea I would recommend hifi speakers if it's just for listening to music in an untreated room as well. They're designed to cope with the crazy random frequency spikes that untreated rooms create by boosting/cutting certain frequencies, monitors aren't.

In my experience, decent monitors will pretty much never sound bad in any room but if it's untreated they won't reproduce the sound faithfully. Neither will hi-fi speakers but they may give you a more enjoyable listening experience and they will be cheaper.
