Hi guys,
I have recently submitted my UCAS application with basically all but one choice to study Computer Science at Kent, Lancaster, Newcastle, Greenwich and Stirling.

I am just wondering if anyone here is studying Comp Science and if so how are they finding it? or anyone here graduated from this course? what kind of employment have they gone into?

I am confident in the Computer side of it eg the programming, networks, graphics, databases and so on. I am slightly worried about the maths as I only achieved a C grade in GCSE maths and I didn't do it as an A Level.

Am I likely to struggle with the mathematics side of the course as I didn't do A Level or ?

Thanks for any help and advice you can offer!

Thanks all for your responses.

It seems from you guys the maths isn't super advanced that would mean I would struggle but rather it is something that I can certainly learn and work towards.

Outside of comp science I haven't really looked at any other courses. Except this one, http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/programmes/bsc-information-technology-organisations#overview
Does anyone do this course? or does anyone have any thoughts about it?

Also Would anyone here say I should go Mcomp over Bsc?

I did just take Stirling off and swapped it for Southampton.

dowie it does not say if I can change it right now just asks which course you wish to apply for.

RomanNose, awesome. I have just put down a choice as Comp Science and the one I linked (Is that allowed or could it cause problems) at Southampton which as you say is a seemingly fantastic uni.

Thank you guys for all the responses it really helped me.

I in the end have gone for comp science at two unis which were Kent and Lancaster. I also applied for
Information Technology in Organisations at Southampton
Information and Communication Technology (GH56) at Essex
Information and Communication Technology (G560) at Greenwich

Just a quick one i want to end my personal statement with this little bit;
I believe that I can attain(obtain?) this degree

Would I say attain or obtain?

Thanks

Oh I know that, the course just looked particularly interesting?

also just quickly again anyone?

I want to end my personal statement with this little bit;
I believe that I can attain(obtain?) this degree

It will be in a sentence :p

Would I say attain or obtain?

Avoid Lancaster Uni like the plague, terrible comp sci course, very little maths though.
Just seen this. It scores highly on the league tables for comp science hence why I saw it. What is so bad?

Are you studying it there?

Also anyone here know anything about Royal Holloway?

Thanks for that energize. I think I will take it off my list then. It is good to have some real world feedback.

Good job I had waited to see what people thought of that small detail in my PS before paying!

Thanks all for your help I really appreciate it.

I have now submitted my application with me applying for Comp Science at Lancaster, Greenwich and Kent. Despite what Energizer said which I did take on board.

Of course there are good points and bad points about each but I am happy with my choices right now and I really do appreciate the feedback from you all.

Thanks again for the help and advice I will update you all (if anyone cares :p) if I receive any offers etc.

Kent is nearby to me hence why it was a no brainer and I have heard lots of really good stories both in terms of education and as you say location etc.

My predicted grades are D* D* D*, unfortunately I have no A level maths so I don't qualify for many universities.

As I say I am happy with my choices and if it turns out that I don't get into them then I will go back to college and get myself a proper maths qualification and apply again. I will still only be 19, of course it would have been good to be able to do it now but it is my fault, I have certainly learned from my mistakes since leaving school.

Hi again guys,
Perhaps I will start a new thread but I will start it off in here first.

Basically my college is beginning to offer Microsoft certs and Cisco CCNA etc to people on my course as quite a few haven't applied for uni at all and I couldn't help but take a look and get some material.

Now wwould anyone almost recommend doing a course like this and then going into employment or am I best off just focusing on going into uni, I am almost equally interested in both having enjoyed the networkng units in this BTEC and doing my CISCO IT Essentials etc. I know of course you can't say for definite you can do a CCNA and earn X and have a fantastic career but you can do a BSc and earn Y and have a great career but just a few thoughts on taking this option rather than the uni path would be great!

My college is offering the CCNA at £500 a semester so in total £2000. It will be "night school" so of course I can either continue in my current job and then when I am qualified look at moving on to something that will utilize this cert.

Are they more suited for someone who is in work and just wants to go further then or change jobs?

I guess you don't have to have certs to get a job you could be lucky and be picked up by a company who will then train you but I just thought that doing one of these certs would help me also?

Thanks for all the posts guys. As I have said I hope I can get a place at Kent as I have read lots of good things about it. I am also inquiring about apprenticeships now at a few companies in IT roles not just IT companies as an alternative to uni.

I did consider choosing for example the CS course with Networking but I am not entirely set on that is what I want to do hence why I just chose normal CS. If I am accepted for Kent to do CS for example, I will certainly enquirer regarding changing courses if I do decide to want to completely focus on that.

Did you do systems analysis in your btec? I'm struggling with that at the moment and would like some help. My teacher is awful and there's no resources I can find online.
Yes I did. Found it really quite easy!
If you're planning to go to Kent, it's worth your while brushing up on some Java before you go, it'll make it easier for you to hit the ground running.
Thanks mate will bear that in mind.
Everyone gets an offer from Greenwich. :p
Oh :(, got an offer from Lancaster as well.

Really leaning towards Greenwich because of the location, I can live at home and I've heard good things as well as bad things but that's like anywhere.

Thanks Stellios as well. Good to hear more thoughts.

Explicit I have recently been discussing with triggerthat and I just didn't even look at City or Brunel. I don't know why either :(

As far as I can see I can't take any choices off now. Only change courses at the universities. I will ring UCAS and see tomorrow if I can take off Southampton (different course) and put on City.

I have also toyed with the idea of deferring Uni for a year and applying next year for City, Brunel, Essex and Kent. Will me being 19 put me at a disadvantage though?

Hi again,
The college have today been promoting a HND that they will start offering from September. They have said that I can do a HND and then do a year at uni and earn my degree. Anyone know much about this?

Thanks for the info regarding age. Certainly another option to go next year to which is good.
