Stupid but probably easy question on connecting speakers to tv

I have a tv (Panasonic 42ST30) and bluray player (Sony BDP-S370)connected to each other via hdmi.

I am contemplating getting an Onkyo HTX-22HD (or maybe the newer X version) 2.1 system which has 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output.

I think the wiring works as follows: bluray player to the hdmi input, tv to hdmi output i.e. tv and bluray player no longer connected directly.

Is that correct? Does the Onkyo (or any other speaker system) need to support ARC for this to work? I know the tv has an ARC hdmi port but I don't think the older Onkyo supports it.
 
Yep that's right. If its anything like the avr's it is anyway.

Just make sure it does audio as well as video over hdmi, otherwise to get audio you would need another optical/spdif cable.

Edit: just had a quick look and it is just a case of hooking it up as you say.
