on one of those crap phone-in programs on tv now...

eighty-six plus

34 + five - 14

105 x two

add the numbers!
so am i right in thinking the answer is 246?

edit: read post #7 (by Al Vallario) for things that have already been guessed.

its never what you think it is. ever. try every way of interpreting it and listen for 5 hours for all the answers and it will never be any of them. too many a night spent in the summer getting frutrated over this.

It depends how you interpret it. Those shows are a complete scam and there are probably a dozen different 'correct' answers and they just allow someone to get the right answer once they have made enough money form phone calls.

The obvious answer is:

(80 - 6) + (34 + 5 - 14) + (105 * 2) = 309

or you can simply add every number there:

80 + 6 + 34 + 5 + 14 + 15 + 2 = 246

or you can simply add the numbers that aren't written as text:

34 + 14 + 105 = 153

etc etc etc. Like i said it's a scam please do not spend any more money phoning in (assuming you have)

i havn't and i wouldn't. just wondered what people thought the answer was.
There is no right answer. That's the point.

Edit: I see you're watching Five. Might as well stay up all night and write up all the incorrect guesses then. This puzzle will undoubtedly continue for a good few hours yet.

Incorrect guesses

-28097, -27960, 18 (x3), 27, 51 (?), 109, 125 (x2), 139, 153 (x4), 156, 158, 174, 209, 218, 224, 231, 246, 251, 259, 278 (?), 283, 304, 309 (x5), 310, 315, 316 (x3), 317, 319, 320, 321 (x5), 361, 375, 383, 408 (x3), 432 640, 20790, 28008, 99210

Clue: "I'm telling you now, its not a minus number"

Edit (03:00): Well, an hour and a half later, the irritating bloke has retired. Feel free to carry on my list of incorrect guesses if you so please, I'm interested to find what the answer was but I need sleep! :o

well, there must at the very least be a limited number of acceptable answers.

CH5 are poor at this game, they had animals one was a Doe and other crazy words.

And the presenter said 10 seconds till next caller and I counted 1 minute with his stupid goings on.

Scam. There is no answer. It's particularly suspicious as they never tell you the answer they were looking for.

Actually wait a second, it doesn't say anywhere that you win money by getting the correct answer, it's only assumed by people watching XD :D

Incorrect guesses (14 minutes elapsed)

125, 209, 304, 309, 310, 316, 321, 383, 408
you can add 156 to that too. it was the answer i heard before i before i mentioned this program.

There's only one other quiz show on terrestrial! :p

I agree with the method you're using to get 246, but I have a different answer: 218. Reason being, that when you just take the numbers out and treat them purely as individual numbers to be added, you still have to take into account + and -. The - in front of the 14 is part of the number, whereas the multiplication symbol can be completely ignored.

Therefore: [(86) + (34) + (5) + (-14) + 105 + 2] = 218

Ah! Actually, whilst I was typing that out, I've seen another possibility. I think it's a trick question. I won't reveal the method that gives me this answer just yet, keep you lot on your toes, but don't be surprised if the answer is 206. ;)

Some chap caled "William" just called in, and its not 218.

Haven't heard 246 or 206 being guessed in the past hour, mind you.

Edit: It's not 246 either. 206 is still in the running...
