Hi i don't really know much about dual core/quad core at the moment apart from its like having two processors at once.
What i want to know is, if i get a dual core prcessor runing at 2.4gig does it mean it will run at 4.8gig? and a processor runing at 1.8gig will it really be 3.6gig?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but i just wanted to clear something up.

Yes and no. Both cores would be running at 2.4 ghz (for example) but you'd only be using the cores to handle different threads rather than getting a combined speed. That said an application demanding enough and designed properly could fully utilize both cores giving you something equivocal to 4.8 ghz.

What is your current specification? and your budget?

Only a few games are coded for dual core at the moment, but the number will increase over time. This does not mean that you will waste a dual core processer by playing a single core coded game; you'll be able to run other programs in the background.

My system is
AMD 64 4000 (single core) runing at 3.0gig
2Gig DDR Ram
ATI X1900XTX
Motherboard= Foxconn NF4UK8AA-8EKRS

I am looking to spend just over £500 and would be planing on geting the following setup

Asus Commando Intel 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB)
And would use my X1900XTX in that setup.

What do you think i should do? get that setup or can you recommend something better for that price?. Or should i just wait for a bit?

well thats a good setup your planning on getting.

it all depends on what your going to do with it,

if you get a E6300 and overclock it to E6600 speeds then it will be just as good as a E6600 and less money. but if your not a overclocker then go for E6600. or if your a overclocker but want a higher maximum possibibly overclock go for E6600.

example: my E6600 is at 3ghz from 2.4ghz and it will out perform a standard speed X6800.

but with that said when i had my E6600 at 2.4ghz it was double the speed of my old AMD 4400 dual core, and even when i had my amd 4400x2 at 2.9ghz the stock speed E6600 still was nearly double speed

well prices come down a lot now and then but if new stuff are allways coming out. so if you want a awsome setup for low price then you will be waiting for ever cause when now-a-day stuff drop price new stuff will be out so you can never have the best for low prices :D

You'll still be getting excellent performance out of the X1900 XTX with the 64 4000+, E6600 is more suited to future cards though, 8800 GTX (especially SLI) and so on.

Thanks for that.

I will mostley be using it for games, i just wanted somthing with more power while i have the monney.
As for the graphics card I was planning on upgrading it later on as my X1900XTX is fine for now. I want to see what ATI will be bringing out next and if nvidia will also bring anything else out after the 8800.

I see no reason to upgrade your existing rig now. If you really were in the market for dual core you could bay off your existing proc and pop in an x2. You'd end up only spending ~£40.
