Stupidest thing you have done with a computer?

I built 5 identical machines for a client to his spec.

Doing the burn in testing one continued to fail after 3 minutes. Took the side off, unplugged everything, plugged it back in but still no joy. Bought a replacement processor and board only to realise on dismantling it that a piece of cable tie I cut off had lodged itself in the processor fan jamming it. Took it out and it worked perfectly

The stupidest thing I've done has to be when I first tried to network 2 PCs together. Having no real idea of how networking worked, I simply connected the 2 NICs together via an standard ethernet cable. Then wondered why PCs couldn't see each other.

Cue much hilarity when I got my mate round to see what the problem was :o

The latest one is probably using a Swiftech H20 120 in my last build.

Didn't turn out very well, cheap piece of junk.

For 4 Months it was fine, no leaks... then it decided to spill its guts out of the seams of the pump and waterblock :(

Why do they put such an evil button there? It begs to be flicked. I still get an urge to flick the one on my current PC even though I know it would end in tears.

I was lucky to be fair, I heard all the horror tails about that before I even wondered what such a magic switch would do :p

When I was younger and knew even less about PCs (it was 1994, I think), I tried to install a new floppy drive without even turning the PC off. I plugged in the data cable, then plugged in the power cable.....I remember a flash, then a bang and after that I can only remember terrible smelling smoke and lots of cursing. The company I bought the floppy drive from replaced it - heaven knows what they thought had happened when I returned a melted unit :D

*Raises Hand* I have also flicked the voltage switch on a psu, maybe we should make a club or a support group or something :D

I have also removed a hdd from a pc while the pc was turned on

Oh and i just spent the last 20 minutes wondering why a part of this piece of software wasn't working after i had entered the password to activate it and had done this many times before... i was putting the password in wrong, my constant doodling had turned the 0 at the end of the password into a tennis racquet, which naturally i didn't think was a part of a very important password :D

Spent ages trying to get an internet connection working, including about an hour on the premium rate phone support. Absolutely cursing everyone from my ISP, telephone exchange, and other users of the computer (family).

Turns out I was spelling the password wrong.

I've deleted iexplorer.exe on windows 98 accidentally so then I paniced. In the end I formatted the entire OS :o

fitted a socketA cooler to my brand new 6800gt back in the day.

suffice to say, it only made it halfway through installing windows before the screen went all checkerboard :'(

I'm also a member of the voltage-switch-dead-psu club :/

When doing my first build I read that its good to use a razor blade to spreak thermal paste evenly. I tried to get one from a disposable razor and accidentally sliced the end of my finger off. There was a massive amount of blood :(
