You can format the disk with a quick format only, it doesn't actually do much formatting in the ways of overwriting blocks. Try it first with an usb drive if you like, dump files on there, delete them, do a quick format and use recuva to get them back. I've acutally managed to recover 80% of the files from a disk that firstly got the partition wiped, then had a new partition setup, quick formatted (because i'm lazy!) and then a fresh OS installed on top. The lost files were the blocks that got overwritten with new data.
