Stuttering at high fps! ($10 paypal if you can solve)

So I'm playing a OpenGL game(Q4) which can either be played at 60 or 90 fps. 60 is fine, but 90 even though the framerate is solid, it gives stutters, like its 30fps. The stuttering is slight, but its enough to notice and after awhile it will give me a headache.

I have a completly different second system which behaves the same way.

Viewsonic vx922
8800GTX
e6600
Raptor RAID 0
2 gig
Vista / XP
X-fi

Samsung 930BF
6800GT
3.4ht p4
Samsung HD
1gig
XP
Sound Audigy 2zs

Now I don't get puzzled easily, but I just can't work this one out.
My refresh rate in windows is 75hz and in game 75hz, using monitor controls I can confirm its set at this correctly. This doesn't happen for everyone. Some people with same monitor and graphics card run it fine (drivers included)

Things I've gathered so far:
- Tried various monitor drivers.
- Tried Nvidia drivers, old, current, beta.
- Not connection related. (tested offline)
- Not low performance connected, my fps is always max.
- CPU, RAM is always below 60%.
- Not O/S specific.
- Clean installation doesn't help.
- In-game refresh and vsync commands don't help.
- Different resolutions in game and windows don't help.
- Disabling X-fi sound.
- Latest sound drivers.
- Forcing vsync or disabling it through windows.
- Defrag didn't help.
- Deleting/increasing page file didn't help.
- No game commands helped.
- No windows processes are taking up anything.
- Tried lowest gfx settings, same.

I'm starting to think it could be power supply?

refresh rate should be 60hz over DVI to the vx922 shouldn't it?

60hz is worse.

Resolution Recommended
and supported
1280 x 1024 @ 60, 75 Hz
1024 x 768 @ 60, 70, 75, 85 Hz
800 x 600 @ 56, 60, 72, 75, 85 Hz
640 x 480 @ 60, 67, 72, 75, 85 Hz
720 x 400 @ 70 Hz
1280 x 720 @ 60 Hz (720p)

If it happens on both rigs, which look very different in terms of setup, then my guess its the game.

Maybe you should try the Q4 forums with the problem, they might be a bit more problem specific for you.

The Magic Number - 60 FPS
Unlike previous games from id software in multiplayer you only need to achieve a steady frame rate of 60 FPS. Anything higher is simply ignored by Quake 4's world update and player movement code. This will help even the playing field in multiplayer as physics will be the same on all machines. There appear to be cvars and hints in the game (#define GAME_FPS 60 and com_fixedtic) that with a mod servers could possibly alter the default tic rate, even if that were the case all players would still be forced to the server's game tic.

John Carmack of id sofware: "The game tic simulation, including player movement, runs at 60hz, so if it rendered any faster, it would just be rendering identical frames. A fixed tic rate removes issues like Quake 3 had, where some jumps could only be made at certain framerates. In Doom [and Doom engine games such as Quake4], the same player inputs will produce the same motions, no matter what the framerate is."

Dual Core Processor Systems

If you have a dual core processor and Quake 4 patch 1.0.5.0 or above you may wish to enable the dual core optimisations. Simply enter seta r_useSMP "1" at the console or add to your autoexec.cfg. If you experience reduced FPS or stutrring issues then read our FAQ How can I stop the frame rate / stuttering issues with dual core?

Yes Dokko, but latest patch allows 90fps and 99% other people are fine.

thx for link, but I've tried that, I'm quite confident I've tried every combination of in game command, even tried with help from mod coders and players.

Seems to be an issue with the game mate, nothing to do with your hardware, also some fixes in that link for CD2 stuttering.

Dont know if any of that is of any help, but i reckon if there is a fix it lies within the game itself rather than anything else.

Bring the console down and type:

Set_com precisetic 0, this will get rid of the skipping.

Also Set_com fixedtic 1 or 0, can't remember which one but try both. ;)

If it works then just make an Autoexec.cfg to load up on startup. ;)

What brand/type/speed of ram is it you are running both the machines?
is it the same brand etc in both? just different sizes.

I had some generic samsung ram and i always get stuttering, tried it in several machines and get the same thing. Sometimes it worked reseating the memory.

either that or the game itself... what game is it?

@ GuruJockStrap, yes, 3x buffer don't help

@ JamesU2005, both xp/vista

@ mattbill, 2 gig Geil, PC26400 DDR800, 4-4-4-12, 2.1v

@ Black Dog, no difference

@ greeny_fastcar, intresting but didn't work, process prority either.

@ dokko, same happens on non dual core system, plus others with dual core are fine. tested r_usesmp 1/0.

Thanks all for you help, my quest continues! :(
