Hi,

Some of you may remember my last thread which was about a sub enclosure, I have now sorted that out. Well the next bit would be which sub and amp shall I get?

Thanks to kind Vanilla he has helped me out with suggesting that a 10" sub would suit the style of music I listen to.

My budget is up to about £140-145 for the sub, amp and cabling. The package linked to below was suggested.

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/1104.html

Now is that the best I can get for my money? Or is there a better deal with a different make? If not is there a cheaper shop to buy that package at?

Thanks.

yea looks good mate also consider a fli trap tube, its a tube designed by vibe, I have one in a 12" which retail at 150 but an internet search will get you one for 100, less if you have a 10".
I'm well chuffed with it very good quality, loud enough, not OTT like my old 2 *12" sony pentagons with a 1600watt amp (taht was a bit silly)

I remember you seemed to recommend that in my last thread also. It's the same situation still, I am wanting to build a custom box due to size constraints and that FLI Trap Tube will be too large. Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

ah didnt realise it was the same issue, I also have a focus! in that case you cant go wrong with alpine. In my experience with speakers quality wins over quantity every time and that alpine should fit the bill perfectly on the budget.
The install I have now is the samallest and least expensive I have ever had but by far the best. consists of 2* infinity kappa 6*9 and infinity reference 2*70 rms amp driving them, and flip down kenwood head unit and the fli trap with a good wiring kit. Sounds great IMO even with the kenny driving the standard speakers. good sound on a budget!

Wouldn't the money be better spent on speakers? I mean any speakers apart from stock!

As the the sub packages you listed the JBL is clearly the better deal imo, its cheaper and the amp is better than the alpine, difference between the actual sub is neligable (not to mention subjective) so go with the better amp and deal.

Well my mate has offered me £30 for his JBL GTO75-2 amp, so i would need to get a sub to go with it. So really was just seeing whether its worth paying more then £45 (the JBL sub price) or not.

The £150 I spent on the JBL Sub/Amp/Box (GTO stuff) seemed to be the best money I spent. I spent around £400 in total on my ICE stuff and the £150 on the sub gear seemed to make the biggest difference to the entire setup.

I am keeping it all to put in my next car (NOT the Rover!) - A 5series or Mondy.

Would you say that this leaves you with £90 for a sub?

£20 on a wiring kit and £90 on a sub sound right?

I would say that he should get a balanced system which is around £40-£50 for the sub and £20 for the wiring kit.

No point in spending money and having one amazing component when the other components are just good.

I reckon a JBL amp matched with that sub would do nicely and wouldn't end up costing very much at all.

Also what's the deal with these massive power cables. Aslong as the cable can support the required current to power the amp why does it need to be an inch thick?

The quality of the phono cables would make a difference, if you are any good at soldering it may even pay to make up some of your own! Ultimate quality for literally a few pounds.

I disagree for a number of reasons.

I think he should get the best he can buy, he's after more tight controlled music rather than volume. While it's a good sub, with another 30 quid you can do much better than the JBL 10". The thing with sub amps is that it's difficult to distinguish quality with them. By this I mean that although the amp is only 'good' you'd have trouble noticing the difference if someone replaced it with a better one. With things like comps it's easy to spot, not so when powering subs.

In terms of space he doesn't have a lot, compared to other subs the JBL is cubic ft hungry, they work better given lots of space which the OP doesn't have.

Lastly because he's building his own box he can tune it to the better sub.

Tesla,

Yeah I can solder fine, soldered directly to boards before. ;) The reason why you go for larger gauge wire then is minimum is because it will give you less resistence along the wire. In otherwords you get closer to the max wattage of your sub/amp. I personally wouldnt use below 8AWG for around 20amp, which with that amp it will be.

Vanilla,

Yeah im after at improving my sound quality of my system. Yeah £20 on a wiring kit, unless I can save a lot of money building a kit myself. I think I will be wanting to save a few bob if I get my mates JBL amp, I would say around £70 would be about right.

Thanks for all this help guys.

Erm for the JL Audio amp in the specs it says this.

Equivalent Compliance (Vas): 1.783 cu. ft. / 50.46 liters
Effective Piston Area (Sd): 53.522 sq. in. / 0.0345 sq. m

Now is one of them telling me the amount of air in the sub i need?
