In an extremely simplistic explanation:
-Diesel burns more slowly that petrol.

Working on that principle, would 'overrevving', or indeed revving past the torque peak, result in unburnt fuel being exhausted and therefore explain the greatly decreased fuel efficiency at higher revs?
