Even after a few days of play there is still something exhilarating about jumping off the top of the escape pod into the safe shallows biome, the colour and life is just hypnotic

I even come up from my base much deeper down just to do it every now and again

I found the touch controllers can interfere with the gamepad controls, so make sure you don't turn on your touch controllers when starting the game - turn on your gamepad and use the gaze cursor and the gamepad A button to activate the game.

Is it worth persevering with the food and drink required or better in the non-survival mode?

thinking it may be fun more casually

@Skidder I started a game in non-survival mode thinking that, but I think it's probably worthwhile. There's a fair amount of the game around creating food and water you'd miss out on.

I'm playing without the hunger and thirst mechanics - I hate that sort of micromanagement.

It's a very well balanced survival mode, that is difficult at times but not impossible, and it forces you to explore with a really well implemented storyline.

The game has a few phases, so the whole struggling to survive thing only lasts a little while, then you get a base and can craft some decent stuff and it all starts to come together.
