I've recently got my VR working again, and thought I'd play through Subnautica as a break from flying in DCS.
Question I have is, would I miss out on anything by choosing the mode that means I don't need to scavenge for food or water?
It just sounds like a grind, but I'm not sure.

Personally find survival/hardcore modes a bit silly as you alternate between the food and water requirements being just an unnecessary extra bother in the early game to being setup well enough you might as well be playing in freedom mode anyhow. Depends how hardcore you want to play I guess.

cheers, good to know I'm not missing something other than the grind... I'll skip the food and water requirement :)

The food/water does tie a little into the mid-game story, though nothing you can't appreciate without it, but personally don't think it adds enough to be worth bothering unless you are really hardcore for the survival experience.

Make sure you grab the VR enhancement mod. Fixes and improves a ton of stuff, the best of which the PDA is not longer glued to you're nose.

Done a couple of hours in the game now, and I am a pretty slow gamer, so I've not progressed far and it's quite intense in VR, but I am enjoying it so far.

Am i right in thinking that I don't need to capture fish, as they're jsut food that I don't need in Freedom mode?

Also, an air pump and pipes disappeared on me after the mothership core exploded - I was 150m+ away from the pump at the time.
Is this an event feature, or will air pumps disappear on me if I stray too far away?

Depends very much on the game I think, I found it quite well balanced and not too much of a grind in Subnautica - it's easy/quick enough to head to the safe shallows and pick up a few bladderfish/peepers if you get really desperate, and it does add a bit more "thought" and immersion to gearing up for an expedition in mid-game.

I play a lot of DCS in VR for hours on end, but I'm finding that Subnautica is giving me motion sickness after about 30-45 minutes.
Not sure if it's aframe rate issue, or the sheer number of sudden direction changes going on... I think if I continue, it's going to have to be in 2D.

Try using snap turning. If you're not used to smooth turning, it can be a bit of a killer till, if you adjust.

If you carry on playing in VR, i suggest avoiding the reaper. Dam thing left me traumatised when it blindsided me and grabbed me in the face, to the point i struggle to play the game now beyond the shallows.

Subnautica by its nature tends to be somewhat towards motion sickness even in non-VR - lots of bobbing motions, lots of things moving around vertically as well as horizontally, lots of running patterns from water reflections, etc. at times it can be disorienting even in non-VR.

I've never really understood people's terror with this game - the leviathans, etc. mostly just left me alone, maybe dodge the odd time they got a bit more aggressive but generally it was pretty chill.

Reapers give you a bit of scare as they lurk around in dark waters sometimes and appear out of nowhere behind you. I had run into one around the aurora and I wasnt expecting a nasty monster at the start of the game. I stopped going to that part for a bit lol.

It didn't bother me much:
