Subnetting for Simpletons

Well, i don't see it as my problem. But if im responsible, maybe I should. But I was just trying out the software which, legally, i'm not allowed to do, i think.

Anyway, he's the winger at work. We have a routine where some of us make cups of tea/coffee for each other. Winger actually wrote a letter to the management whining why I made tea for other people. "Couldn't they make tea for themselves?"

Of course nothing happend regarding the letter, but having to work with a back-stabbing idiot is arghhhhh! The other tea drinkers laughed themselves silly when they found out.

? You don't see that the downloading of illegal material is your problem?

God, with comments like that, i wonder if its this other person being odd or you.

If he wants to sit on a different vlan let him. But if you really run the IT department, simply say you wont be doing it, as there is no call for it at all.

Not really, no. Please educate me if i'm wrong. If someone decides to browse ebay and facebook and messenger all day, surely i'm not responsible.

I'll say again that the use of the monitoring software was my idea and not sanctioned my management. Looking over my shoulder I could see that he was up to no good, and the software confirmed this. Frankly I was more worried about him suing the company that I was monitoring his usage without his knowledge.

I am not talking about facebook etc, i am talking about the downloading of illegal material on your companies net connection. No one needs to know that you used software and noticed this. You could block known ports for Bit Torrent etc, and just say your beefing up security a little. after reading about companies being fined after their employee's where downloading filsm etc.

I am sure it wouldn't be hard to find some examples.

All i can say to this is good luck to the other guy. he is getting what he wants and at the same time treating you as a mug. at the end of the day you are the who will get ****** due to your own bad attitude. you are the kind of network manager that i would not employ. you are your own worse enemy!!! ehtier deal with the the situation or continue to hide behind forum asking for people to say the the other guy is in the wrong. YOU ARE IN THE WRONG, THE MAC GUY IS PUSHING FOR WHAT HE CAN GET. GOOD LUCK TO HIM!!!!! YOU MUG!!!

You have to remember everything that goes on at a company is the responsibility of the management of that company, if somebody is doing something illegal, it is the managements fault, in fact it was the management who did it!!!

did you/He sign a company rule book... it will mention that you can use the internet for personal use, its there for a full back if people start taking the ****.

I don't believe that there are any rules against spying on employees internet use.

and if it comes down to it, just say that he is opening the network up to viruses, and that he just want his own subnet so nobody can see what he is downloading.

anyway

mac's suck

But macboy knows how to treat pcboys as mugs!!!

It's a grey area and ultimately comes down to the company terms and conditions as well as the AUP should one be in place.

Should a company wish to monitor internet usage and or email transmissions it has to be stated within the employee contract.

torrent clients can use any port they want thoughm so unless you block everything and just unblock specificaly the stuff you want to allow, it will be hard to stop torrenting.

If he continues to whinge, perhaps ask why it is that only his "superior" macs are suffering on the network, while the windows machines continue to function properly? :D

If it wasn't encrypted, a half-decent router could identify torrent traffic as such and then either block of QoS the life out of it. That's a big *if* at the start though....

Your Mac fanboy is shamefully uneducated in this matter.

Swiftly hit him with a large object.

(I think..)

His own mac would do nicely.

Tbh if you decide to leave the company, make sure you have collected plenty of information about this mac user before you leave. A day or two after you have left, hand in your "evidence" to the police of his illegal file sharing and get him ****** :p

Wow, slow down tiger. My primary role at the company isn't network manager. It's ensuring files (InDesign, Quark, Publisher, Word) get from their amateurish design and specification (300dpi, cmyk etc) to a usable format that can be transferred to a printing press. They gave me the opportunity of running the it as it was cheaper and easier than an outside source as I was constantly on site. I've worked my way up the proficiency ladder and outside of work setup systems for 3 other small companies.

But I do agree that I need to get professional about this and lock the place down. It'll obviously mean more aggro and I wouldn’t be surprised if I was told to put it back as it was.

He is indeed constantly pushing for what he can get, but what can you do when management don't really care and are happy to give in. I'm not there to fight their battles.
