So i've currently got a Q acoustics sub (1000si i think). I'm looking to upgrade as its getting a bit long in the tooth. Whats a good upgrade for around £300 or so, or is there any?

Cheers

Second-hand BK XXLS400 or s/h BK Monolith would be where I'd start.

There may be other used stuff around too at that price. You just have to look what's available then do some reading of the reviews.

Have you included the resale value of the Q Acoustics sub in your budget?

Could get 10" or 12" svs second hand.

You need to consider usage. Big or small room? Movies or music or both? Want planet destroying bass and at 20000db or just a little bit more low end?

I wasn't planning on reselling it tbh. It's had various liquids spilled on it despite being under a table (thanks kids:p). And i'd rather stick with new rather than used. Would there be a big improvement or is that a bit like asking how long is a piece of string?

I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to gadgets/toys. I like brand new stuff lol. The only constraint might he wear it sits, but I'm sure I can engine a solution to that:D.

If you fancy a BK, they have an outlet store on eBay. I've just picked up a B grade Monolith for under £500.

No idea why it was B grade though, can't find a mark on it.

For a £300 budget, and being constrained to new only, my gut feeling is that you'll be tinkering around the edges rather than making a worthwhile upgrade.

Either reconsider your stance on used, or save up for longer. Don't waste the money you have to spend now on something only marginally better than a sideways move.

TBH i suspected that the budget end of subs is very limited, i don't mind paying £450 for the BK one, i just didn't want to not say a budget and people suggest a 2 grand sub:p.

Again there is nothing with second hand.

If the two cars are the same price what would you prefer

A brand new vauxhall astra
Or a second hand lightly used mint condition lambourgini?

I bought speakers worth when new £900, for sum of £130. Mint condition.

BK XXLS400

100% - beautiful quality and mine has been superb for 5-6 years now that i've had it. Save a bit more - totally worth it

12" sealed box will be fine for music and movies in a small roombut in medium.to.large and open room for movies you'll need something from more.

The svs cylinder subs were great for movies and they take up little floorspace. They just go up.

Wouldn't mind two different subs svs SB ultra 16 and svs pc ultra 16. One for music other for movies.

Would the BK sub just connect to the coax that i currently use(into the mono RCA)? Also whats the best setting on the back for use with a AV amp. I'm assuming crossover to max (as av amp has a crossover), and turn filter off? What does high gain mean?

Cheers

Edit looking at it, i think i'd only use the low gain in my setup and just ignore the high gain. Last question, this doesnt auto power off, how much juice will it use just idling as the tv is only on maybe 4 hours a day.

Coax - Yes

Crossover to max or bypass if labelled that way. Volume to 50%. Phase to 0 degrees. (The AV receiver's auto set-up will take care of volume/gain and phase)

Contact BK directly on the.more technical questions if they're not covered in the manual. You did download and read the manual, right?

While we're on the subject of BK subs where they don't have a high level pass through for the speakers, how would you filter bass frequencies away from the main speakers?

I'm running a NAD stereo amp to power my front speakers and obviously any crossover between the source and the amp, or between the pre/power sections is going to cut these frequencies to the subwoofer as well. I run the sub high level from the speaker outputs on the NAD.

@theone8181, if you're looking at BK, definitely check out the collosusxb outlet store on ebay. You could save yourself a considerable amount of money.

I've not bought it yet lads:D. I've read the manual and I understand now, I emailed them and the guy said each sub is built to order and if I want they can add in auto power off which is pretty cool. Ive not seen the high gain connector before and it seemed am odd way to connect it.
