Is it possible to sign up and make payments to a US based website with a UK bank account? How would the payments be processed and would the company convert the money themselves?

At the moment I fancy signing up to lynda.com but I have in the past wondered if I can make purchases or subscriptions to companies asking for USD.

:)

Just sign up as normally AFAIK. When the sites take money from your account, it should be converted using whatever the currency rate is at the time of billing.

Using a credit card, the credit card company will convert it at their rate and usually charge a small fee (1 or 2%), I think one bank offers a c/c that doesn't charge any fee, but I can't remember the name.

some US sites (zune for example) want to take payments only by CC and need this to be registered at a US address - depends whether you have to be a US resident in the T&C (for example for DRM reasons etc.) whether that matters and whether they check it

Nationwide offer no fee when purchasing goods/services in another currency.
