Is anyone aware of an app or way to get the subtitles of the film/tvshow you're watching cast straight to a mobile phone?

**Please see further down for a more detailed explanation. Not put it here as people have asked for clarity, so dont want to edit.

Yeve lost me.. is the video on the phone? On the TV?
What's the source of the video? Most streaming platforms now have subtitles in built.

If yer talking like fansubs of foreign movies they're typically hardcoded but from time to time there are separate subtitle files available.

As ~Divine~Wind~ says, you could do with being a bit clearer in what you're asking. What are you actually doing, and what do you want to achieve?

Based on what you've suggested/implied so far:

You could download them from OpenSubtitles or SubScene, but the result is usually a .zip or similar compressed file. You'd need to extract the .sub file and place it into the same directory as the film in question. Or, depending where the media is actually stored, Emby, Plex and Jellyfin allow you (including on their mobile apps) to search and automatically download subtitles for whatever you're watching (TV or film), and make it all work seamlessly.

Play the film on your phone at the same time. I don't think anything more eloquent exists.

Afternoon gents.

I apologise, i realise what sounded normal in my head didnt come across that way.

Basically, i am deaf/blind, i currently have lost the use of my hearing (another long story) Rendering me with no hearing whatsoever in my ear.

When we watch a film, normally I am using both the sound and the subtitles as a combined aid to understand what is happening on screen. (For anyone curious going from the blind bit, we sit 2ft from our TV)

So without the use of hearing at all, I am finding it hard to just see white subtitles on a film especially in lighter scenes when the subtitles are white.

So I wondered is there a way to have the subtitles on my phone so i can read them easier whilst still watching the film?

We did try google transcribe, which for normal conversation is fine but for tv it doesnt pick it up.

So sorry for vagueness. :)

Don't think this specific app exists, but you can certainly give this a go:

Live Transcribe
A speech to text accessibility app from Google, produced in collaboration with Gallaudet University. The app is provided free of charge and boasts impressive recognition abilities with a customisable user interface giving the option to set the displayed text size and background colour. The ability to use external wireless microphones such as those found on bluetooth headsets is also provided in the app settings once the device is paired up; this would allow the speaker to sit at a distance from you while you read the display on your phone. The service requires an active internet connection in order to function.

Get a Bluetooth headset, connect it to your phone, plonk it next to the telly and let the phone do the work :)

Might not be the best solution but it'll certainly help!

Thats really kind and thank you, but i said in my previous post that i am using live transcribe, i just dont seem to get it to hear the tv.

Will have another play later with it. :)

if you use KODI has your video player you can setup OpenSubtitles to bring subtitles in.
I do it all the time on my Firesticks so you can do it on a phone.

You can even go to OpenSubtitle.org and download the SRT files and link to them with the video player you are using.

it works a treat but you may have to download several for one that is the right one.

Mccan you get a Bluetooth headphone adaptor dongle shove it in the TVs headphone out and connect it to the phone as a microphone input (via Bluetooth) so the phone can hear perfectly?

Thanks for clarifying for us. I'm sorry about your difficulties; I'm very hard of hearing too, and understand some of your troubles. As I said in my previous post, it depends on the source of your media. If you're able to 'obtain' the movie/show and put it on Plex or Emby, or certain media players, you can download subtitles (even automatically) and set the display format of them.

For example, you talk about 'losing' sight of the white subtitle text on light media backgrounds: It's possible to set the subtitles to show up on, for example, a solid black background bar with whatever colour text you wish. That will overlay the film and mean that, irrespective of the media's background colour, the subtitles remain legible for you. It's possible some streaming services have this level of customisation, but I can't think off the top of my head.

I know all too well the frustrations of subtitles, but I'm hopeful you can find a solution and wish you the best with it. Let us know how you get on.

What media sources are you using?

Things like Netflix, Prime etc. permit altering the style of the subtitles including font colour, background bars and so on. This maybe an easier solution?

Thank you for the replies all. So we use a blu ray player mostly.
We do use netflix and other streaming services, which on those yes we can alter the way the text is displayed.

But it was more if we stick a film in the player was there a way to get subtitles on phone so i can read easier whilst still watching the film.

Will keep looking.
I guess we`re old and like to pop a physical disk in a player rather than a streaming service. :D :D

I've not tried it but perhaps a subtitle viewer on your phone such as Subtitle Viewer (there are quite a few if you search on Google Play).

It seems these apps can search for subtitles or you could download them from sites such as Subscene.
Thank you, We will give this a go. Thank you very much. I really do appreciate everyones replies and suggestions. :)
