Subtle differences between RTM and Retail?

I know most will say RTM and what arrives in your retail box are identical (build numbers certainly are) but I've noticed some subtle differences.

When the installation is coming to an end it performs the system performance check. With the same hardware this seems twice as fast in retail x64 as it did only two weeks ago when I installed x64 RTM.

The desktop icons, noticibly Recycle Bin, seems more polished and "finished" compared to the icons in RTM.

When setting up your speakers it gives you the option to assign different icons, set of speakers, headphones, phone and so on but in retail I could swear there are a few extra icons to choose from that wasn't there before.

Now either I've just missed all this in RTM or they've slightly tinkered with it. Anyone else noticed anything?

Apart from the fact that I find it a hell of a lot quicker than the Release Candidate, I don't see much else, then again i've only had retail installed for about 3 hours.

I think you're dreaming. They're identical.

Some of the changes can be attributed to better/more featured drivers though.

The icons you mention are on my MSDN RTM downloaded copy, so doesn't sound like a change there.

I may well be dreaming hence I "asked" rather than "stated" regarding the possible differances.

That asside there does seem to be a growing number of people reporting slight differances between RTM and retail.

One quick question though.. How can you say "The icons you mention are on my MSDN RTM downloaded copy" when I didn't actually state which icons I believed had been added??

It was only in jest, I'm not having a go. :)

Just re-read your original post - I thought the icons you mentioned were the new additions, but they weren't. So I can retract that. Any screenshot of what you've got? I'd be happy to compare notes.

I'll take some screenshots in the morning for comparison.

If I'm mistaken then fair enough and it's obviously me merely getting old but I could swaer there's some additions. Hopefully through a comparison we can find out.

hmm - why are you discussing pirated software? RTM is supposed to be just that, Release is what is added to RTM just before duplication. I really don't think Bill is that stupid to send the full release to manufacture when it still had 2 months before release. TPM and Bitlocker are now fully functional which was not fully implimented in RTM.

Go buy the real deal - stop freeloading. - sheesh people pay 400 quid for a graphics card but still pirate software - lol

who said anything about pirated software?
Quite. The release on MSDN is the same as the disc released this month. It has legally been available to download since November.

RTM = Release to Manufacturing. It IS the release - I think you're getting confused.

I don't see why or how Microsoft would or could have made changes between the version released in December and the retail version available now. It would cause enormous problems later on if they had done (if they are different versions both marked as "final release" with the same build number)

Although I think it's unlikely that the RTM code has been changed, I've used both the RTM and consumer versions and it does feel nippier and I don't think it's my imagination.

Cheers for your comment, I'm glad someone else seems to think there's aslight differance.

I knew most people would take the easy option and imediately dismiss my comments as being negative seems to be the norm these days with most people.

If two people do the 'winver' on their vista installs one from rtm one from retail and see what versions, as I doubt an outfit as big as M$ would let their change control procedures fail to update the version numbers.
I installed RTM and have no problems with that... must go, i need to install from my retail version cos my hard disk just crashed

hi

a easy way to find out if the RTM and retail versions are the same, heres how.. go in windows folder in vista right click on a system file (i.e. explorer.exe) then click properties then look at the created date.. mines 02 ‎November ‎2006...

or here is another way. look in windows folder for WindowsUpdate.txt then look in that file for WU client version and OS Version
