ok, so its my birthday soon and i wonna get something for my car so im thinking of getting a sub but my car has little room in the back so i was thinking about mounting one in a stealth shelf thing but i have heard that free air subs arent as good as boxed and that you need a specific type of sub that can work best in a free air situation.

anyone got any advice/links regarding free air subs and fitting one to a parcel shelf?

You best bet would actually be to get a low profile sub, or a small active bass unit with built in amp. Both are quite small.

A shelf mounted sub will take lot of building and will never be as good as a boxed sub. The bass won't be as sharp or accurate unless the shelf is really well made and supports the sub firmly and dosen't move, but there's still the lack of sharp bass from what I've heard in the past.

Pioneer make a low profile sub, the model name is the TS-SW3041D. MY friend had the original model of this and it sounded very good and the bass as a lot more accurate than my same sized infinity sub which had a full depth to it, running off the same amp and headunit in my car.

All you would need to do is make or aquire a sub enclosure designed for the sub so it's the exace specs to what the sub requires. Not a difficult task with the right tools and can take up less footprint than a normal box, could even be dropped into a small false floor to protect the amp too.

A sub will only be as good as its enclosure. I've heard the most expensive subs in a standard box and I have heard cheap subs in a taylor made enclosure. The chep subs won hands down, but were still constraned to a few specs, but were still better sounding.

You could build a low profile sub into a low profile box that sits under a shelf, now that might work. Experiment is what I say.

so is it not really possible to stick subs into the shelf in a 6x9 style?

i have seen some 6x9 subs that pioneer make on car audio direct but seem pretty weak

Free air (or infinite baffle) subs can work very well. They are not as easy as just chucking a sub onto the parcel shelf though. You need to buy the right subs for a start, then you need a very rigid shelf that forms as much of an air tight seal as possible in the boot area.

I looked into it as an alternative to having a sub box, but it was just too much aggro to do well.

What kind of Car is it?? is that why you dont have any room or do you still need into your boot etc?

What you could try is one of the stelth box type ideas?
They are the sub boxes which run along the side of the boot? uses up dead space for a lot of it and dont encroatch into the boot that much, its a lot less intrusive than a conventional Sub box.
