Subwoofers (subs)

I run a QAcoustics 2070Si. Which is pretty damn epic!

But to be honest, With all the bass that the floorstanders give out (2050i) I rarely even turn it on due to the moaning the Mrs will give! :-(

I hear that moaning you are getting can be drowned out by turning the big knob on the receiver a bit more clock wise :-P works on my setup

It's a common problem with partners

Depending on the room and the location of the subs, running 2 together has the risk of interference. (positioning them like normal stereo speakers should avoid this) I never felt the need for a second sub, one was sufficient to rattle the foundations.

I'm going to be in the market for a sub soon but not sure what to go with. PB13-U is tempting but it looks ridiculously big. Problem is the room is 6m x 6m so need something hefty, and I'm wondering whether 2 might be more suited.

just arranged the purchase of a MA RSW12

it was between that and a bk xxls400

Hope its good, it looks the part!

What kind of system are you aiming towards?

Tricky one that oli.

With a single sub you may find you'll need to adjust the db's either manually or with a remote if the the sub comes with one. You may need a boost for music in that respect but all rooms are different and you'll only know when you have one in place if you need another. And as Somnambulist quotes in #16 greater spl's with two.

Personally i'm going with sealed units as my listening is 95/5 music/film.

One thing with music is that it depends on the kind of music you like listening do.

There's no point is getting a sub that goes to 30Hz with rock music, but if you like electronic music with a lot of bass then it makes more sense to get a sub with a lot of output below 40Hz..

Well I will be pairing it with either an anthem or Onkyo amp so setup shouldn't be too bad. Given the majority of my music is electronic a single pb13-U might well be best given its depth!

Thats a load of crap - no offence intended

If your bass reponse is how it should be i.e. close to a flat curve as you can get then it will suit all uses films, music it doesnt matter. The level will be set by the receiver to balance in with your main front L&R (+ Other speakers) - the level set will give you most likely the best crossover frequency performance between your main speakers and the sub.

Therefore by adjusting the sub level you adjust this as well which is not a good thing for either music or films

Once set right - its right for everything.

If thats not what you are getting there is a good chance your freq reposne / decay etc is off and I would strongly advise looking into it - Room Equlization Wizard is the way. a 500w 12inch sub is more than enough sub for the majority of rooms in an average domestic environment. Getting good bass reponse is much harder - and if overlooked all your going to get is one note bass or worse boomy bass

If you go with an Onkyo with Audessy of any sort it will set up your sub, using eq filters simialr to that in an antimode - if however you go for another brand such as Pioneer, Yamaha etc that doesnt have audessey - then you have little to no bass management and an anitmode is essential.

I have said it a 1000 times, having the best sub in the world doesnt mean you will get the best bass - its all about the sub positioning in the room its in and the room absoption factor which is often little to none without treatment. And thats for bass from 250htz down

99.9% of the time a sub has to go where life permits it - therefore an eq of sorts is essential to combat the rooms effect on its performance.
You will never find a owner of an antimode who says it isnt brilliant - thats rare for tech of any kind
