Such A Horrible Problem :(

Hi all,
I recently aquired a new motherboard (M4A78-VM) and I'm having serious problems with getting my graphics card installed.

It has a fancy set of onboard graphics, such as a HDMI port, a DVI and a VGA port. I can see the onboard stuff in the device manager, but I don't see anything else. I am currently running my screens off of my PCIe card, but the computer just isn't seeing them. Everytime I try and install CCC or even just the drivers, the PC freezes and reboots. I've tried Omega drivers too, and they just tell me that they can't find the hardware. I'm really stuck here guys. I've got the appropriate settings in the BIOS (making sure my PCIe card is the priority) and I'm having no joy. Any suggestions? I know the card is inserted properly and it's getting enough power, and I used all of the other hardware in my last build (with the same GPU and PSu) so I know they all work fine. I'm stumped :(

Thanks in advance for any advice (or sympathy) you can give, I sure need it!

Cheers,
Chris.

Hi there,
I'm just installing the latest BIOS revision, I'll write back when it's all done with the verdict. I've tried installed the chipset driver, still no joy :(

Thanks for the reply,
Chris.

Latest BIOS revision installed, still not seeing my card in the Device Manager. I'm installing everything on the motherboard now (LAN, Audio etc) in the hope that I will then see it. Bloody annoying to say the least.

Hi,

Is there anything in the bios that allows you to change the gfx card initialisation order?

You may need to change it to "pcie first, onboard 2nd" (however the bios words it) in order for the separate card to be used.

Does the board support the onboard gfx being used at the same time as a separate card? (and is this what you want?).

Does the pcie card work in another machine? (just to rule out any potential hardware problems).

EDIT: Ahh, sorry - just reread and see you have the settings done already and you even have the display attached to the pcie card. Does that mean you are physically using it but it doesn't show as a device in windows? Anything odd in "unknown devices"?

Hey Fizzy,
Yeah, I've got the priority right in the BIOS, and I've turned surround view off for the time-being, just so I can concentrate on getting my card to work.

I used the exact same setup (different motherboard of course) on my old Asus board with no problems, so I know it all works. I'm getting a picture from my card, I just can't see it in Device Manager.

I am also unable to install the onboard graphics. I have "Video Controller" and "Video Controller (VGA Compatible) in the 'Unknown Devices' bit, and everytime I try and install a driver for them, it says that it can't find any hardware for the drivers I'm trying to install. Such a bummer :(

Chris.

Right, I set the onboard graphics as priority, and it allowed me to install them. I had to change my monitor to the onboard graphics obviously. I'll have another little fiddle around and see what I can come up with.

You can't actually disable it, all you can do is change the priority (onboard, PCIe etc) and turn Surround View off. Bloody annoying.

Ok - sounds like windows has detected the card as its listed in unknown devices. It doesn't recognise it hence why its showing as a Video controller.

Looks to be a driver install issue then basically. What is the PCIE card you are trying to install the drivers for? If its ATI then running the catalyst installer normally installs the appropriate driver automatically in such cases - but sounds like you're having problems there too.

Is windows showing multiple displays at all? If so is the one you are using listed as the primary display? (just in case the driver install looks to the primary display driver for card info etc).

What chipset is the board? For example if it's using an nvidia based chipset and you are using an ati card then there may be drivers conflicts there...

...other than what has already been suggested, I can't think of anything else unfortunately.

Hey Fizzy,
Thanks for the reply. The PCIe card in question is an ATi Radeon 4850X2 2GB, and the chipset of the motherboard is AMD 780G + SB700.

I successfully installed the drivers for the onboard graphics card, and they worked fine. As soon as I switch the priority to PCIe, I am unable to install any drivers for it. Windows freezes and reboots. I've tried installing CCC, but it just doesn't work and it does that freeze and reboot thing. I've tried installing older drivers, still no joy.

I've never had anything like this. It's very, very frustrating since I could really do with using this system for some editing.

Cheers,
Chris.

The only other things I can think of is testing the card in another system to check it's fine or do a fresh install of windows...

Hi,

Hmm... ok, so you are using an x2 card with ati/amd on board video - it's not the drivers trying to do something fancy with crossfire that isn't supported by the motherboard possibly? (guess it would be trying to do tri-crossfire if onboard is still active...)

Tried an earlier driver/catalyst version?

Is there any options in the bios for how much memory is designated for on board video? Some systems even disable on board if you set this to 0. Could try matching the memory of the x2 card (512MB per gpu?).

Do you know that the card actually works? If you have another rig, or know someone who would be willing, I'd say pop it in there just to check. Also if you have another card (lie, cheat or steal one maybe?) that isn't an X2 you could try putting that in to see if it isn't a driver conflict or whatnot

I took the card out of my old motherboard and put it straight onto this one, and I got this problem. I know for a fact the card works. I'll try it in another system to be sure if I don't get it fixed soon, but that's at work so it'll be hassle. I'm almost certain that it's not a hardware issue (apart from the new motherboard, but I'm trying not to think about that yet)

As for the driver problem, when I set my GPU to priority it takes the onboard graphics out of the mix completely. Turns them off basically. And you can't see them in Device Manager, so I don't think it's getting confused with the onboard graphics.

I've tried everything I can think of now. It's so frustrating. I'll try changing every setting in the GPU section of the BIOS later on.

Chris.
