Such sad news about little Rayan

Poor kid:(
I was watching the news about it a couple of days ago and it was looking hopeful:(

Seems crazy in this day and age that they could not have been rescued.
Unfortunately when someone is stuck down a well/pipe the technology and options to rescue them haven't evolved much in ~50 years, it's still dig down next to them if you can't get down the same hole, and that means you're limited by the speed at which you can get the equipment in, and how fast you can dig somewhat safely to them.
The machines have got smaller/more powerful/reliable but you're still limited by things like the make up of the ground.

Wasn't it really narrow? Like way too narrow for an adult?
Short of being able to have a massive litter pick it isn't a simple thing.

Not surprised by outcome. Surprised poor kid lasted so long to be honest

Yup
Apparently it narrowed down a lot, which may be the only reason he survived the initial fall if the sides narrowed enough it acted as a brake.

What would stop them lowering a rope/chain/cable with a foot rest/base down to the kid though?

Was the kid not conscious?

The hole being too narrow, the kid not being in a position to use it etc.

I'm fairly sure that would have been a very early idea but when dealing with very young children, or those that are injured your choices are even more limited.

Yeh, i can see that if he was not conscious or badly injured that may not have been an option.

What a horrible thing to happen. I wish I never watched the videos of the poor sod struggling at the bottom of the well. I guess he died from his injuries as surely he should be able to last more than 4 days without food and water and they should have been able to pump oxygen down there if it was a problem.

Very sad news. Must be heartbreaking for all the rescuers who worked round the clock to try and save him. RIP Rayan.

Its about 3 days for water, though a friend of my partners just recently survived 4 days, though it was touch and go, she wouldn't have made the 5th day.

That's horrible, it seems like something that just shouldn't happen these days, that it shouldn't take that long to get some ropes set up and get someone out of a well. So sad :(

A huge part of that too is prevention rather than cure. Effectively the parents had a 35m deep hole big enough for their child to fall down, had no walls/lid to it, and let him play around it unattended. No idea what the law is like in Morocco (obviously) but here would there be potential for neglect/involuntary manslaughter (don't know if that law even applies to your own children)?

It's very sad. I thought he was going to be ok. I hate to imagine the upset and stress to the family. The poor boy. Very sad. :(

Some asked was it because of air and water. As the story progressed, it was mentioned pipes has been lowered. The pipes provided water and air.

RIP :(

They don't make the headlines but there are thousands of child deaths every day, many of them preventable. RIP to them all.

Send a hook down and a walkie talkie get the kid to hook on then communicate

Such a pity neither of you were in charge of the rescue operation.

From what I'd recalled reading, the hole was about 25cm in diameter, so barely wide enough for an adult to stick their leg in.

Apparently these uncapped boreholes are quite common. There was another lad in Spain iirc a few years ago who fell down a deeper hole and died before they could dig him out.
