Hi all,

Just came back upstairs to find my computer had restarted itself and displaying a 'No master HDD' error on post. I had no warnings of this. does this sound like a mechanical failure or a virus? Any other ideas or solutions?

Thanks in advance,
James

Does sound like a failed drive - sorry.

Firstly check that the IDE and power cables to the drive are connected correctly and that the drive is configured correctly for master/slave..

Can you hear the drive spin?

Grab a copy of UBCD and boot from that.. Use the HDD diagnostics for the manufacturer of your drive.. i.e. Hitachi..

Moving to HDD :)

I've had exactly the same thing happen to me recently with my 500GB WDC Special Edition. I found that if I disconnected the power and SATA cable and then reconnected it it somehow worked. However - if I try to transfer files or install stuff the hard drive starts going very slowly and starts thrashing. It is taking unusually long to load stuff as well and it's getting a bit annoying.

Thanks for the replies and for moving the thread. Interestingly I just, out of desperation, tried starting my computer again today and it worked without a problem *touches wood*. I've just backed up all my stuff just in case.

Any ideas what could have caused this? Over-heating? Slightly worried that the next time it happens it won't come back.

Should probably have explained. It's a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, which is what worried me. I was sure my serial number was unaffected by the firmware issue. Although I would have thought that would have been permanent. Any ideas?

Thanks guys.

Exact same drive, more fatal issue:
mine started clicking while loading TF2, PC wouldn't respond, so I turned off. Upon turning back on, it wouldn't boot. No errors, just a cursor that went down a line every 5 seconds or so. It clicks repeatedly, about 0.5 second intervals between each click.

Sorry for jacking your thread, but did yours click, and should I RMA mine?
