sudden increase in cpu temperature

Q6600
asus formula maximus
bfg 8800gtx oc2
4gb ocz ddr2 ram
not overclocked

I was playing assassins creed for roughly 2 hours when the game crashed suddenly, refering speedfan, my cpu temp did this :-

and the temp stayed there, PCwizard says the same, but its reporting the individual cores at only 32-36c.

also, according to task manager the proscessors are idling.

any ideas whats going on here?

What PSU and CPU cooler you got ?
Are you sure if no cables or anything inside the case got stuck in CPU cooler ?
Does it happen more oftenly or it did just once ?

psu is the OCZ ProXStream 1000w
cooler is the scythe ninja, nothings obstructing the fans.
it did happen once earlier today also.
might be worth noting that the bios reports temps of 28-30c when its blatently not had time to cool down from those kinda temps on restarting.
