Sudden Motion Sensor - does it require HDD support?

I know my MacBook has the Sudden Motion Sensor business to try and protect the HDD if the laptop is thrown from a motorbike.

If I upgrade the HDD, do I need to buy a model which has anti-shock features built-in in order to keep using the SMS? Or is the whole point of the SMS that there is no need for the drive to have its own built-in anti-shock features?

Basically, in the new Seagate 7200.2 range, I'm trying to decide between the AS and ASG models

Nope. The sensor is built into the Mac - so stick any drive you like in.

MacBooks/Pros ship with a variety of drives- I've seen Toshiba, Hitachi, Seagate and the odd Fujitsu.

Some laptops have had the movement sensors for ages (IBM Thinkpads, some Toshibas). Seagate are offering the anti-shock drives for machines without the sensors built in.
