Hey guys

I've just won a set of new surround speakers on ebay, and i doubt that my panasonic av reciever will do them justice.

This is my set up as and when they arrive:

Mission m35i (heard a friends and fell in love, but that was musical fidelity and nad powered)
Mission m3c2 centre
Mission m32 Rears
Paradigm PS1000 sub (had this for a while)

Except replace the **** sony in that picture with my Paradigm PS1000, which is an awesome sub for home theater stuff.

my current receiever is a Pioneer VSX-C300....which is:

# DIN Continuous Power Output:
# DIN Continuous Power Output (1kHz) 6 ohm : 30W + 30W Stereo
# DIN Continuous Power Output (1kHz) in Surround Front :30W/channel
# DIN Continuous Power Output (1kHz) in Surround Centre : 30W
# DIN Continuous Power Output (1kHz) in Surround Rear : 30W/channel

So its no ideal to such big speakers :p

Now....what AV reciever would i be able to pick up second hand for <£200 that is gonna be well suited to this set up? HD would be great but not essential as my TV isnt HD, that's next on the list, but understand HD for this price is gonna be hard! :p I do like the sound of Denon recievers.

Cheers guys,

Tom.

I bought the Yamaha DSPAX761 from RS for £199 NEW!, it was £500 when it came out so to get it for that price, new, boxed with warrentee etc is a bargain and a half. Just check out AV forum, they have been selling like crazy, and everyone (myself included) is very happy with it.

Its built like a tank, accept PCM over HDMI, so it will play HD as long as the player is capable of decoding it (PS3 for example), check the website for the full specs, its a really nice bit of kit for the money.

I recently set aside £400 to buy an amp, I looked at all the usual canditates (onkyo, 2nd hand ex high end stuf) but decided on the 761, it was just to good an offer to turn down. and no disrepect to the speakers you have bought, you dont need any better.

ive heard the difference of the m35i on a denon 2805 which is a good few hundred quids worth, vs it preamped with a musical fidelity preamp and then into a nad c370(?) power amp......MASSIVE difference. The m35i do really punch above their range (they were £400 new) and seem to react well to good amping.

Does that Yamaha have pre outs? How musical is it? Ive generally found yamahas to be great for surround but suck for stereo, this will be used for both.

It does have pro outs, so you could hook it up to a adecent Stereo amp. As for how musical it is, I couldnt comment, I only use it for movies. I have seperate setup for music. Iv yet to find listen to a AV thats capable when playing music. The top of the range Arcam ones are OK, but they still sell for over £400 second hand.

biggest difference is the 1908 is HDMI

it has HDMI video ouput for on screen display (no more faffing about with stupid menus) It also can pass through 1080p signals as well. However its not upscaling or anything fancy

and crucially can take 6 channel LPCM audio from a PS3 via HDMI. But to actually process HDMI bitstream, you'll need something bigger and pricier than this.

1907 has no HDMI at all, just optical spdif or coaxial audio inputs and only has composite or S-video video inputs.

19xx series I wouldn't bother with. Nowhere NEAR enough grunt. The M35is were £850 new btw ;)

An old 3805 would probably be a far better buy, or a cheaper one with a power amp to drive the fronts.

cheers DRZ.....as you know i'm now looking at a Denon 3803, which still has component input for HD and seems more than powerful enough.....was £1k when it was current!

id recommend a 705 minimium if its an onkyo, or the equivalent receiver from othe3r manufactures. you will need a fair bit of grunt for those, yes. a genuine 50-60w rms per channel is probably a minimum. that doesnt sound like a lot but a 605 isnt capable of that.

If you don't need HDMI upscaling or fancy video processing, and don't mind sacrificing a few of the newest audio formats, I'd look into something like an older Denon A1 or A11. The 3803 is good (my 3802 is surprisingly good), but you'll get more punch with a bigger amp, even if it's older.

They name them in a similar fashion. AVC-A1 or A11 are amps, whereas DVD-A1 or A11 are DVD players IIRC. I think they may have SR or SE after the number too.

I say all of this, but they may be a little too pricey for your budget right now. I think the 3803 is probably right on the money.

ah yea ive found them, they seem to be going for £500+ 2nd hand! :(

I lost an auction on ebay for a 3803 as my sniper didnt work :( my max bid was £20 more than the winning bid too!

Ah well.
