Right, I need more epic metal, my current crop are being in danger of being overplayed!

I'm thinking along the lines of Nightwish's "Ghost Love Score" (i've you've not heard it, I suggest you do) and also along the style of Dimmu Borgir.

This rules out hollywood metal such as rhapsody and definately no dragonforce! I'm afraid I find "battlemetal" a little tooo cheesy to be epic.

What do you lot listen to ?

Nile?

Manowar? (best band in the universe)

OOOH OOOOOOOOH!!! I forgot:

Rakoth!! Absolutely awesome stuff!

Listening to Planeshift now - such a fantastic album.

Rhaposy are awesome ;)

But as Penski says, Manowar are bloody brilliant.

How about Edguy? Avantasia, Tristania, Within Temptation, Blind Guardian, Epica, After Forever, Hammerfall, Lacuna Coil,

the first few might not really be to your taste, lots of cheesiness :p although Edguy are definitely worth a listen (Hellfire Club & Theater of Salvation)

To prove a point:

Rakoth - Fear (Wasn't In The Design)

Dancing, dancing round the fires
Scales of brass and blackened gold
Wings of flame, obsidian eyes
Miracle you behold

Sparkling bliss you see in her motion
Joy of living and dancing in flame
Gave the birth with all your devotion
Time to give her a name

Charming dance draws the rune of Earth Flame
Mesmerizing, enchanting, femimine and proud
See - her life and the fire are the same
"I shall name you - Llah", - you speak her name aloud

Smile freezing on your face, turning into the painful grin
Burning invisible crown compressing your head
Scarlet and black rings dancing before your eyes
With groan you're falling to the ground

Whispering
"Why?"
"It wasn't in the Design!"
"Pain... So this is pain... Now I know how it feels... My creation... It wasn't in the Design... So it must not be..."

Charming dance drew the rune of Earth Flame
Mesmerizing, enchanting, feminine, divine
You saw - her life and the fire were the same
So you named her Llah forever to shine ...

New feeling - like the wave of black flame: wrath
Melkor rises with his fists clenched and shouts to the sky

"You, the One! Leave him be! It's easy to control the weaker... Try me!"

"YOUR WORDS..."
____

QUALITY!!!!

Crack these out for good measure too:

Morbid Angel
Cathedral
Carcass
Godflesh
Sleep
Brutal Truth
Vader
Bolt Thrower
Gandalf

Early Pitch Shifter has it's 'epic' moments too...

Bolt Thrower
I still have an original vinyl copy of their first album "In Battle There Is No Law" from 1988.. "Concession of Pain" is a quality song

I remember playing it to my mum when I got back from Our Price, she wasn't so keen :/

I have never heard any of the bands anybody including the OP has mentioned thus far, but epic metal to me means symphony X or dream theatre :p

Just listened to The Haunted - The Dead Eye (wow)

Penski - are you talking about the same Manowar?
The band from before you were born?

Amon Amarth are pretty epic, probably not what you're looking for, though.

Iron Maiden is the obvious solution; the new album being a good example, also check out Brave New World, another great album.

Yes - the one with swords and bare chests...

They are the definition of 'A metal band'.
